Hello!

Looking to put my son into an afterschool activity. He has done kindergym before but he’s not really into it. Was thinking of soccer or rugby but kids that young don’t really understand too much. Any ideas?

  • I’d go for swimming in Prep, then look at other things after the first year!


  • Gymnastics I think is good. It keeps them active, they learn co-ordination and balance and yes, unlike team sports, they don’t need to learn strategy or tactics, just learn each activity.


  • My 5 year old grandson has just started soccer and he loves it! I thought it would be too structured for him but times have changed and the culture is now so much more inclusive. He told me they don’t have a goalie!


  • Swimming is always a good thing to learn young but I do know there are good soccer programs for littlies. It’s more about fitness, learning to kick and having lots of fun until they get older.


  • Even when they don’t understand all the rules of soccer or rugby, kids can still have lots of fun with it and learn a lot. Karate is also a nice after school activity. I’ve my youngest on Ninja warrior, which is lovely too. And what about swimming ?


  • Kids can play Rugby from 5 years old and trust me we don’t expect much other than catch pass and run. It’s great to start young as skills are developed age appropriately and are built on as they move through the age groups. Definitely worth giving it a go my two sons and daughter have all played Rugby from 5 years old and loved it.


  • Not too sure what age Prep is as it’s not a term we use where I live. But if that’s 5 years, I’d strongly suggest Joeys. It runs one night a week and my girl had so much fun going. She learnt how to read a compass, went hiking, had her first sleep over at the hall. She decided not to continue onto Cubs this year, but may pick it up again when her other friends graduate from joeys to Cubs (she would have been the only girl)
