Hello!

I suffer with chronic pelvic pain so I cant do much with my son..as standing for long periods increases my pain levels….we love cooking together but we have done the spag bols, cookies, cupcakes etc….I’d love to do something easy but different with him…. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Home made pasta and especially ravioli that you can fill.
This can be done sitting down and is loads of fun :)

  • I think there are no limits with a 9yr old to what you can cook together. You need to make it yourself comfortable; work at a table of the correct height and have a comfortable chair

  • Home made pizzas are always a winner. What about something he’s interested in making and as others have said, get him to do the leg work while you sit and supervise.

  • try to get a seat or sit at the table. make cupcakes. if you are able, get your child to fetch the ingredients and bowl etc and mix it together.

  • I love when children cook with their parents. Much about cooking is experiment. Funny words to describe basic meals increase the excitement. A basic cheese and pineapple/banana toasted sandwich can become a magical fantasy when called a tropical Beach snack and served with a drink (even water) in a colourful cup, funny straw or tiny umbrella! What about a Fruit Bat platter… chopped pieces of various fruits sprinkled with a few sultanas (Fruit Bat droppings- boys love “rude words”). Skewers of foods. A basic cold meal of veges and meat is more enticing if threaded on a skewer and called picnic! Picnics can happen outside, in a cubby house or on a picnic rug in the lounge room or under the dining table. Good food only needs a little imagination with the naming and serving to inspire young cooks and good eating habits. I hope you like these suggestions even though I am a little long winded.

  • Sushi is quite easy and fun to make – we make it with our 8 year old. We use a bamboo sushi mat – and to make cleaning up easier, i put a very slightly damp tea towel on the bench to catch stray rice/ingredients – just pick up, shake off and pop in the washing machine afterwards – your boy could do that for you.

  • Muffins would be fun & yummy ,various flavours to choose, chocolate chip, blueberry ,what ever he wants, pretty quick & easy to make.

  • Maybe something else could be decorating. Either bake or buy plain flat biscuits, make plain icing or even buy the Betty crocker tub, get some lollies, and decorate them whole sitting down. How lovely you bond over cooking (great life skill too!)

  • Pizzas are easy and the variations are endless. Maybe a frittata? Again, you can make it to suit your tastes and whatever is in season. A carbonara dish? Or lasagna?

  • Pancakes or pikelets are easy, and you can add any topping you like, e,g. nutella, peanut butter, jam, fruit, or cheese etc

  • chocolate crackles and honey joys, quick and easy

  • get pizza bases, pita or make your own , all ingredient chop in bowls while sitting down good idea, then both of you can create, make a batch to cook and freeze some for later date. can be vegetarian or using left overs too, even some sweet ones are great too. My son with his new adopted daughter at his side, they cook up a storm with him to guide

  • Pancakes. Pizza. Stews and casseroles, you could prepare, start cooking & do something fun together while it cooks.
Slice potatoes into thin slices & use a cookie cutter to make fun shaped chippies :)

  • Pizzas are fun and fairly easy. Easier if you have a bread maker for the dough. Stir fries are a yummy go to as well, pretty basic

  • My son was great at creating his own pizzas & bruschetta. Also if you have the right type of stool & then ask him to do more of the running around. But only when he wants to cook, not because he has to or he’s not going to enjoy it anymore.

Try finding a cook book together & going thru & cooking different recipes you may like. Keeps them more interested in making the choices.
