What’s your bedtime routine with the kids? When did you stop tucking your little ones in?
My partner and I were reminiscing our childhood and I realised I wasn’t tucked in from a pretty young age – My parents said goodnight from where they were and i’d take myself to bed. My partner was tucked in for a long time.
We currently have 5 kiddos – 4, 6, 7, 8 & 10 and each of them get hugged, kissed, 3-5 days a week lullaby/story and sometimes a chat (for whoever needs it that night). Sometimes it’s 5 hugs and kisses before you’ve left the room but most of the time it’s lovely. Sometime’s when we buggered we consider the fact that it would be nice if some of them took themselves to bed but we know we want to enjoy it while we can!
Some nights we break it up and let the older ones read in bed while we put the youngsters to bed too.

  • I was the same as your partner and wasn’t tucked in from a young age. It was fine, but I remember seeing mivies with kids tucked in and read stories and thinking how nice it looked haha. It sounds like you’re doing a great job cherishing these moments with your kids and adapting to their needs as they get older. Especially with a large family, so good on you and your husband.
If you wanted the older ones to get themselves off to bed maybe they can go to bed at a set time while you tuck the younger ones in (you could set an alarm to tell them even if needed). They could have time on their own to read and get ready for bed, and then when you finished with the younger ones you can go give them a quick kiss goodnight and switch the light off for them?
    But honestly, you’re doing great!

  • I wash my face and clean my teeth an hour before bed and then wind down. I put lavender on my pillow and wear an eye mask to bed.

  • Our boys would have to be in bed by 8 but they could read for 1/2hour if they wanted to. It was a bit harder for us as there is 9 years between them. Sometimes my older son would go to bed earlier so that his little brother would go to bed sooner. He would then read or listen to music with his headphones so his brother never knew. That closeness has never left them which I am so thankful for.

  • We have 2- almost 6 and 8 turning 9- we still do a story which we read to them together and then we just tell them to go to bed. Sometimes they come and give us a kiss and cuddle goodnight but then they go straight to bed on their own.

  • Mine always wanted to be tucked in even through high school.

  • Hubby would do the prep and reading and I would come in and kiss my son goodnight. He’s on the spectrum and we found this routine worked for him. I don’t remember the last time… I guess when we don’t know it’s the last time it just passes.

  • Do what you feel is most comfortable.

  • Our 2 still ask to be tucked in 8 and 10, ill keep giving hugs and kisses until they stop asking, they are only little for so long.

  • I tuck my primary school age children in every night. For the high school children, I take a lead from what they prefer, one still wants to be tucked in, the other would prefer not.

  • I dont think your ever too old to have a cuddle good night. I get in to trouble if i havent gone in and had a cuddle and said good night to my 12yr old.

  • Bedtime routines are always calm and relaxing.

  • I love the idea of tucking the kids in every night. I didn’t have that from a young age so I would like to have a routine like that with my baby as she grows up. At the moment it’s just bath, feed, bed, but I would like to incorporate a book and story in there as she can handle.

  • My daughter is 2 and obviously still gets tucked in each nap time and night time. I don’t think I will stop until she is old enough to tell me she doesn’t need me to do it anymore. But if she ever asks I will never be too busy to say no.
My younger sister has anxiety, she’s 15 and still gets our mum to go into her room with her (not every night) but just to lay down and chat. It helps her calm down before bed because she isn’t a good sleeper. She’s always had nightmares even as a young child.
If you are happy to do it, and they want you to do it. I think, do it! One day will be the last day, That terrifies me.

  • I never got tucked in either.
I have two kids, 2 and 4 months and I tuck them in as they both sleep with us.
Hopefully they’ll want me to tuck them in for as long as possible. I never want them to grow up but at the same time don’t want to wish them small forever as they won’t be able to experience life!

  • Our kids are 3 and 5 and we will be tucked them in and kiss them goodnight as long as they want us.
