  • Buying items when marked down and freezing, or using straight away. Buy items on special. Check out nqr store as they can have many things at reduced prices. Local fruit and veg stores often have staples such as potatoes, pumpkins, Onions, Carrots for much cheaper than supermarkets, and also usually have reduced items.


  • Meal planning for sure, saves heaps of money and no more waste I didn’t realise how much I used to buy that was thrown out because it went off before I used it .


  • To buy bulk. It may seem like a bit of money at the time but it saves u in the long run


  • Buy in bulk where you can. Load up on regulars when on special. Check out local farmers markets if possible. Avoid processed, pre packaged products


  • Always decide what you want to cook for at least 2-3 days. Then go shopping, ready to change something depending on specials. I always check Coles catalogues on Wednesday and stockpile on items I regularly use. Buy a freezer if you don’t already have it. It helps you save money too, because you can cook double the amount you need for one meal, and freeze the rest.


  • Just try and shop for specials when you go out for clothing or food groceries


  • Look for markdowns and try and work out what time your supermarket marks things down. Eg some supermarkets mark their bread/cakes etc quite heavily in the evening. If you have a freezer, you can take advantage of this and stock up.


  • Some good tips to read in the comments here already ! I can’t add anything new.


  • Plan what you’re having in advance and stick to a list for that. If you can shop late in the day when bread and other perishable items are heavily discounted.


  • Another saving is to have a garden and to freeze meals and to make preserves.


  • Meal plan and make a grocery list after checking all cupboards, pantry, fridge and freezer. It’s amazing how much stuff can come out of my pantry! I also try and shop the outside perimeters of the store so I’m not buying confectionery and junk food which certainly pushes the grocery bill up.


  • I get a bit extreme when I am broke.I take a list and I stick to it AND I record a running tally of the cost as I am doing the shopping and when you see the number going up high it is much easier to put the non necessities back on the shelf.


  • Stock up on non perishable items when they are on special. As far as that goes , if you have room ( a spare fridge) you can buy extra butter, cheese and yoghurt when it’s on special if it’s got a good use by date on it


  • Buying meat in bulk and specials and putting them in the freezer is great, hoever be careful of perishable foods like dairy ,fruit and vegies as you need to keep an eye on them so they don’t go off quickly. The temperature of the fridge is important so make sure it works well and adjusted correctly. Stick to your shopping list weekly helps with keeping to a budget as well.


  • We buy meat and fruit and veg and other food from the markets at the end of the weekend when everything is on special and we get some bargains.
    We shop specials too and menu plan according to specials and what is in season.
    We also buy in bulk which is a terrific saving.
