Hello!

Uncle Tobys Mom Answers 1

Whether it’s after school or on the weekend, I’m struggling to find ideas to keep the kids active at home. HELP PLEASE! Can you share your top tips on how you keep your kids active at home?

  • I never focused on it. My kids were naturally active. Busy bike riding, skipping, jumping on the trampoline, going for walks, swimming, etc

  • The trampoline! We also bought one of those inflatable kmart punch bags which we put in the trampoline and the kids and all their mates have a ball punching the bag , jumping over it etc, hours and hours of fun for our energetic little boys!

  • Draw a hopscotch in your backyard.

  • My kids are fairly active but on the days when they’re being couch potatoes we have “earn screen time” activities like bouncing on the trampoline. We make up different sequences that they try and out-do each other on. Usually they end up having so much fun they forget about the TV anyway

  • Keep it simple- my kids just enjoy a walk to the dog park and then they love getting creative playing in the trees.

  • Instead of telling them what to do, i ask them if they want to go outside but with me, and their always happy!

  • Throw your doors open and have the kids of your neighbours come over to play. Happens here at least 4 or 5 days a week.

  • Loui your large property and many animals sounds lovely !

  • indoor/outdoor – Hopscotch, skipping rope, palm size bean bags, basketball
indoor – play tag, compete on who can run the longest on the spot, e sports
if you are one of the lucky ones with a backyard, perhaps t ball, volleyball and all sorts of other sporting games.
Hope you and family continue to stay well

  • Get involved with them! I’ve found that is the best way, play chasey with them, do treasure hunts that involve exercise eg “you’ve found a task do 10 star jumps before you move to the next clue” or “hop to next clue”. I find kids respond so much better when we get involved in being active with them

  • We go for a family walk/bike ride everyday. Just do incidental things, chalk exercise trails, jumping on the tramp

  • To please some good music at the background

  • We have a huge property and lots of animals to look after. My kids still try to get out of being active, but if we get outside with them, even cleaning out the chicken coop, is fun when we do it together :)

  • In our enclosed backyard we have a trampoline, swingset, basketball court and balance beam. But lately our older kids are all out on the road together with the neighbouring kids from our street. They’re out on their bikes, skooters, skate and boogie boards. It even gets my 16yr old of her devices !!

  • I’ve ended up having to limit screen time to get them active, when we get home from school we don’t jump straight on and in the mornings we don’t either. Obstacle courses in the back yard (the kids make themselves or with a bit of help), bike riding, literally sending them to get the heck out and move in some way actually works alright too. Even the least active kids will have active days and active as kids will have inactive days.
