My little girl is 19 months old and still sleeps in her cot. It is a big cot and she has plenty of room. She also rolls around a lot and we like the safety of the cot so she doesn’t fall out. When is the best time to move to a bed?

  • it really does come down to what works for you. My 2 year old is still in a cot and is only just going to move into a disabled bed (bigger cot due to seizures) in the next few weeks. If your child is climbing in and out all the time then that is a good reason to transfer them to a normal bed.

  • We have just set up our son’s room with a mattress on the floor. We will be moving his cot into that room for awhile while he transitions. Starting next week he will have day time sleeps in the bed and night time sleeps in the cot for about a month, then all sleeps in the bed for about a month then we will take the cot and put it back in the nursery ready for our next baby in July.

  • Our daughter had a big cot and stayed in it till she turned 3. It was her own space, she loved it, she would put herself to bed when tired. On waking she would play quietly with her toys and climb out when ready. We left the sides down as she got older and put pillows and a doona on the floor in case she fell out. Her older brother had a bed from 14 months old so each child is different.

  • I would leave her in the cot. I have just moved my 22month old because he was climbing out of the cot- or rather climb/ falling. No rush.

  • If bub has enough room then I would keep the cot. :-)

  • It’s completely up to you… There is no right or wrong answer to this. My first moved at 19 months to make room for baby number two. Baby number two is now two years old and we won’t be moving her as long as she is sleeping well.

  • when they are walking, I believe is a good time for a toddler bed

  • we took the side off my daughter’s cot when she climbed out of the cot and toddled down to us at the other end of the house, which was around 18 months, I think! It is a personal preference and if you think they are going to start climbing out and possibly hurt themselves, maybe just remove one side of the cot (if you can) and see how you all go :)

  • it really does depend on your child. I find if they are standing up in their bed and trying to climb out it may be time to consider a bed. if you are concerned about them going into a normal size single bed there are some good little toddler beds around for those in between years after around 18 months.

  • For safety reason, I think about 4 years old is best time to move to bed.

  • It really is a personal choice my son has been in a bed since he was around 2 years.

  • Mine all moved out of their cots around 18month – 2 years.

  • mine all have been put in a bed around the age of 1, they started in toddler beds and then move up to a normal bed around 3

  • Around 4-5 years old for me

  • I think once they can walk and you believe they will be safe (not fall out, not be able to get in to trouble if they do get out and wander) and once the cot is no longer big enough or comfortable for them.
