Here’s a Halloween question…I once heard that if kids are going to eat lollies they are better to do this all in one go rather than me telling them they can only have a couple each day. Apparently its better to get it over with, brush their teeth and get rid of the sugar. What do you think?

  • I would just make sure that they drink plenty of water and brush their teeth afterwards. Not terribly sure I would want the sweets to last for days/weeks as they get accustom to it and expect it after all are finished, if eaten in one hit, it doesn’t become a habit.



  • A dentist advised us to let the kids eat whatever is in the party bag they bring hone from a party at once, then have a big drink of water to wash off before brushing their teeth.

    Too much sugar has many negative health effects but I wouldn’t buy the sugar-free lollies as a substitute, since the artificial sweeteners have their own long list of potentially harmful effects.



  • i let them eat what they want so long as they brush afterwards. Food is just food. I provide them with a wide variety of fruit, veg, nuts dried fruit etc. by limiting the so called “sweet treats” the more they want them. I do not restrict food and let them eat what they want. A friend once scalded me for this so next time she was around I went to the pantry and got a box of chocolates, biscuits, lollies, some sliced up fruit and a garden salad from the fridge – put it on the table and called my four kids in for afternoon tea. The only food that was eaten was the fruit and salad. She never said another word.



  • Sugar is not good I would allow a few then get rid of the lot we don’t have sugar in the house you can get sugar free lollies



  • I assume they wouldnt have a heap of lollies but ive also heard the best thing is to let them eat them and then brush as its best for their teeth
    we try to give out as much sugar free stuff as we can :)



  • Personally I wouldn’t my children to consume all the lollies they receive. I Give them a small amount and make sure their teeth are brushed correctly. I would never allow my children to have all their lollies or anything too sugary all at once. Everything in moderation is the key :)



  • I agree with letting them get it over and done with in one hit! let them indulge and be kids!



  • A sugar burst is going to be better on the teeth but perhaps not that great for the tum.



  • Eating 5 lollies at one time is better than eating 5 lollies at 5 separate times, but I personally wouldn’t think you’d have to get them all eaten in one day. Maybe one lolly session over a number of days?



  • I think any treat in moderation is ok, moderation is the key



  • Being in the dental profession we always recommend eat it all at once and not have multiple bursts of sugar throughout the day. I do agree however that it may not be that great for the tummy to have such a burst of sugar. Better for the teeth but not so good for the sugar levels.



  • I would never think it would be a good thing to eat all the lollies in one sitting. Everything in moderation.



  • I would tend to think that as long as they are brushing their teeth correctly and morning and night it wouldn’t make a difference if it is in one hit or spread out. In the end they ate still consuming the same amount of sugar. What is important is that teeth are brushed correctly and frequently, flossed and using a mouth wash helps aswell.



  • It is important that children should brush their teeth after eating sugary food but a sugar overload would cause a high for any child so spread their treats out.


  • i think it depends on the lollies. i would rather give chocolate than gummy lollies ( they stick to teeth )
