Hello!

Hi! At a week old my little girl was having issues latching and I found what I believe was an upper lip tie that goes down the front gum and under the palette. My Dr agreed she had one but not severe and she was growing well and feeding so no concerns. I asked for a referral to a pediatrician anyway and at 3 months old still waiting for the appointment. We live North Brisbane, anyone know of who else I can take her to see? Or is it not an issue? She is still gaining weight well but I don’t think she latches great, she comes off the boob and I have to hold it or she loses suction….thanks in advance :)

  • When your baby is 1 week old you should still have checks by the midwife, so she would be the first to go to. Midwife can advise you about proper latching and also can refer you to a lactation consultant if needed.

  • I have asked the dr again and still heard nothing from the hospital…..I have also spoken to my chn and they said she has ome but if its not affecting her latch and she is gaining weight not to worry. So I’m thinking its not a big deal.. :)

  • If you still have concerns over this i would be phoning up weekly as if the consultant has any cancellations and also head back to your GP and ask him to write another referral saying its now urgent.
I think tho seeing as she is gaining weight and no other problems she wouldnt be classed as urgent.

  • See your midwife or the ABA to see if they can refer you to an oral surgeon or a paed. Good luck.

  • Australian Breast feeding association will be able to help you, they can give you advice, and send you to the right places if need be.

  • I saw a lactation consultant at the royal womens at herston (didnt cost anything for the first 28days of my baby girls life)
She is now 4 months old and thriving but they saved me from going to formula and helped me so much as i have a bub who comes off also and it was latch and they helped me learn how to successfully do it..

  • Sounds like my son when he was born he is now ten. And if I had a dollar for everytime I heard the word mum I would be rich, however I am with great kids. Babies use the nipple as a dummy also this is why it may seem that she’s not always drinking; I believe in the 70’s the used to put what they call a paper cut in this area to give more flexibility to be able to latch with tongue, if weight gain is healthy then I would say everything is ok. Your maternal nurse or were your little one hoes for health checks should be able to give you great advice. It sounds so much like my son he would drink the just want to suck the nipple as a dummy then he would drink, I think it’s the comfort of the mother, I think everything is ok if weight is stable.

  • MLE00 I think has a good answer there. Whilst you are waiting for the paediatrician I would see your health nurse as they have had much experience in this area and possibly a home visit from the Australian Breastfeeding Organisation. Have you looked into another paediatrician? Perhaps there is one with a shorter waiting list. I know where I am
Some have much longer waiting lists than others. It may be worthwhile to ring a couple and ask what the waiting time is if you have a referral and then get the Dr to write you a
    Referral to that particular paediatrician.

  • Possibly the best people to have a talk to is someone from breastfeeding Australia and some child health nurses, I found these women generally had the most experience with small babies and everything related to them, they could spot any issues pretty much straight away. The main thing is to ensure bub is latching and feeding ok, this may involve you demonstrating a ‘normal’ feed, pertty sure they can actually perform the ‘snip’ too if it is necessary, its not a complicated or painful task. Best wishes!

  • My daughter has upper lip tie, I dont think that affected her nursing. She’s turned 2 a few weeks ago and is still being nursed. If you’re concerned definitely take your daughter to see a pediatrician.

  • Ask your local midwives to help or send a referral, as they can help.

  • My granddaughter had the upper lip tie & they snipped it the day she was born. They said she would have had problems feeding otherwise, so maybe your little one is OK if she is feeding & sucking well. Good Luck!
