Hello!

So in Australia the popularity of Halloween is growing. Trick or treaters are knocking more each year. What are your thoughts on celebrating Halloween and trick or treaters?

  • We celebrate Halloween it’s fun for the kids and I make lots of Halloween themed deserts

  • It is growing in Australia so much more, people love it as it’s all a bit of fun!

  • I think its more an opportunity for kids to dress up. As for trick or treating as long as they are with an adult and in a safe environment I don’t think there is any harm in it.

  • I thought they made even more of a production of it this year. I’m not really a fan but that didn’t stop my husband taking our daughter out. Ah well, I guess if it makes them happy.

  • I’m not a huge fan. I agree with MoM176887 and all her reasons.

  • Americans!!!! Not a huge fan of it, but I can understand the hype

  • Also, we ration out lollies and treats, like with all foods.

  • I like it. I think it’s great for kids! It gives quite a strong sense of community too. But I agree that the kids come home with a lot of junk food!

  • We celebrate Halloween and have no objection to trick or treaters. It is all just a bit of fun.

  • (1) My main gripe is the junk food that children (and adults) end up eating. I think that does way more damage than people realize. breaks my heart to see so many lollies going into little bags for kids that you know are going to get disease from them in a decade or so. (ditto the junk at Christmas and Easter).
    (2) My other gripe is the way we go to great lengths to dress up / look scary / buy spooky stuff and expose children to “evil” (that is always there along with the funnier costumes) and then wonder down the track why they get nightmares, wont settle, are scared of the dark etc. etc. Perhaps if we didn’t dress up as ghosts, demons, devils, witches etc. we’d save ourselves a lot of time and money
    (3) As for knocking on people’s doors… I like the idea of posters that say whether ‘tricker treaters’ are welcome or not. would prefer there were no ‘tricks’ if the kids didn’t like the lollies and/or that there were community events organized (like the carols at Christmas) that people could go to if they wanted to do something with their kids in community.. (the kids could go round on a ‘treasure hunt’ collecting tokens that they could trade for ‘treats’ although I suppose there would have to be an entry fee for an event like this)
