Hello!

My son who has just turned 4 has had a belly button hernia since his belly button peg fell off after birth. We have had health nurses, doctors etc tell us that it should correct itself but if it hasn’t by age 5 then it will have to be surgically corrected!
It hasn’t gotten any better over the past 4 years and it sticks out quite a bit which worries me from a cosmetic view.
I’m hoping over the next 12 months it just goes away but considering it hasn’t improved over the last 4 i don’t like our chances. I don’t want him to have to go through the pain of surgery but it will need to be done if it doesn’t correct itself!
My question to other MOM mums is has anyone else’s child had the same thing? Did it correct itself? Did they require surgery and was it really painful?
A friend of mine from school had a belly button hernia when she was 2 and had to have it surgically removed and now has no bellybutton, just a hole where it should be… Of course i don’t want this happening to my son so i’m starting to worry! any advice would be great! Thanks

  • My 4,5 year old has a bit of a belly button hernia. In our case I don’t think it’s bad enough to go through operation, as she hasn’t had any complications or complaints, but it’s just protruding and contains some tissue (but not intestines). Unless it gives a medial problem, I will just leave it. But when it needs an operation, it’s just a small operation, don’t get too nervous about it.

  • I was told yes, but nope it didn’t and it got fixed in an op when he got his testicle lowered poor love. x

  • I would keep an eye on it, get your health care professional to keep an eye on it. I’m sure someone will tell you if its fixing itself or if it will need surgery

  • I don’t have any advice, id say the surgical option is looking more likely though but its relatively minor surgery, make sure you go private if you can, don’t stress hun xx
