Our 8 yr old was born a micro premmie and had a lung collapse at 30 days . He tends to get a bad cough/ cold every time winter hits and usually needs steroids. We pulled him out a few weeks before the end of last term. We’ve been doing work from the year appropriate educational work books and the work the school has sent. They are due to go back next week, but we still have our reservations about him being safe and not getting the virus. Something is telling me not to send him back till next term, but I’m not sure if keeping him home will have a negative effect. Also I’m not sure if what I’m feeling is mother’s intuition or just straight out fear? Hubby is usually the voice of reason, but even he has reservations about sending him back. I’m tempted the ring the education department for advice, but it won’t be unbiased. I feel like we are gambling with his health and that doesn’t feel good. A lot of parents just send their kids to school sick, and don’t care. It kinda feels like can we trust the other parents to do the right thing and keep their kids home if sick.. Thought I’d come here to ask for advice and see what other parents are doing.

  • I would be seeking my GP’s advice.

  • With your child’s problems I would be keeping him home and home schooling unless you feel you can’t do that. To be very honest my children have found out so much that their children didn’t know when they started home schooling that if I were in their or your position I doubt that I would ever send them back to school. They are being indoctrinated rather than being taught. Just my opinion.

  • My children will be home the rest of term on doctors advise as I had chemo earlier this year and my immune system has not recovered. I am glad that the doctors took this decision out of my hands as it would be a very hard one to make.

  • I struggled with this decision but decided the risk was too low to endanger their education and sent them back

  • In your situation, I’d keep him home. We are monitoring the situation carefully and will pull our kids out again at any sign of a resurgence.

  • Under your circumstances i totally understand your concerns. I would talk it over with your son’s doctors to get medical advise and then discuss options with the school.

  • Or school will be cracking down on sick kids being sent to school and I think they’ll be sent home, same as any work place at the moment.
I’ll be sending my youngest back to school as he’s had enough

  • Keeping in mind your child’s health, ask your doctor and see what he suggests. If I would be at your place I wouldn’t send him to school because health comes first.

  • Also; getting GP advice about any medical conditions is always a good idea when making decisions about reentry to school.

  • I think you should go with your gut. When you have your reservations that is enough reason to keep him home. Some kids are more vulnerable and you should take that serious. You could have a chat with your GP about it and ask GP for a declaration.

  • I would personally be cautious and keep him home he is 8 y/o and will not be negatively impacted by your caution. My grandchildren 7 & 12 are being kept home by their Mum who is a Nurse. Time will tell what should be done next and I hope you get him immunised for flu every year I make my whole family go and get the vaccine I think if he can have it might be helpful over the flu season. Please do not feel bad what you do as parents you are doing out of love. Best Wishes

  • If your child has a medical condition you don’t have to send them back to school and the school will provide work for them. It is only if you choose to keep them home that work is not provided

  • You shouldn’t worry about the school or the other children, just focus on your own child. If they have health issues just let the authorities know that you won’t be sending them to school until you are positive he will be 100% safe.

  • If u dont feel comfortable don’t send her to school .I had two kids and they are going and quite happy .schools are taking full precautions .Rest its your call .

  • Ultimately, if you feel this way, keep your child home, having my husband back me on My worries i wouldnt give it a second thought, and you are too right! It’s not the school I don’t trust… it’s the other parents that would be eager to offload their children healthy or sick!

But at the end of all this, I understand education IS important, but for now.. it’s nice to slow down and embrace the little children and spend time as a family, personally my 4 children have matured and flourished it’s been a really nice change to be forced to slow down and appreciate what’s in our own backyard, yes school is important, but so is learning to slow down and teaching our own children… go back to the basics, teach them cooking, teach them to do washing, clean their own rooms, dishes, making their own food, organising themselves in the morning ect.

I’m very hesitant on sending my children back… I believe a second wave will hit, but while the infection rate local to us is very low and my children are fine to go back, it will be nice for them to go back and see their friends..
I’m going to be researching the news daily so that I can keep up to date, and much like before the lockdown occurred I made my own decision weeks before to send my family into isolation, there is no rule book right now…. we must do what’s best for us and put our health and well-being first❤️

People are criticising others but to be honest… no one knows what’s going to happen so don’t feel like your choice is not the right one, it definitely is when it comes to the health of your babies❤️❤️❤️
