Hello!

My kid is in before and after school care and loves it. He is in grade prep and loves all their activities. The carer use to take him to and from class. They stopped doing that said the kids needs to ‘learn independance’. Now my kid is scared because at the end of the school day he has to walk through all the parents by himself to go to after school care. Shouldn’t 5 year olds have a carer still pick him up from class to get to after school care? or am i just overly worried cos i know it scares my kid?

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I spoke to the after school care lady and they said they hav organised someone to take him to after school care every day. phew! one less worry in life :)

  • At five years old I was going to Seaford beach by myself!!! Mind you that was 60 years ago And I’m still dumb!!!!

  • SEACHTHETEACH has a good suggestion there. I remember when my son was in prep a couple of years ago and they were assigned a “buddy.” I would speak to the principle and after school program leader in regards to this issue. I certainly know how you feel. I am a full time working single mother and you worry enough about them while you go to work, without having the additional worry that they are anxious about an issue and one that makes you feel uncomfortable as well.

  • Wonder if there is an older ‘buddy’ who could walk him over there for you?

  • I certainly don’t think it is safe enough for a 5 year old to walk to and from class by themselves. In the 3 oclock mayhem they could easily be lost, snatched or run over!

  • Wow!! My Kids Were In Prep Last Year, And All Thru The Year Kids Weren’t Allowed To Leave The Class Unless Their Parents And Carers Where There To Get Them, I Think You Should Talk To Them As The Kids Are Still Learning Their Way Around The School
