Hello!

My gorgeous, smart 10 yo daughter is a little on the large side, wearing size 14. I am focusing on healthy eating choices and finding fun ways for her to be active, but at the moment she does have a belly. I don’t have an issue with the bikini, but am on the fence between ‘wear it if it makes you feel good’ and ‘not a good look’.

  • Can definitely see where your coming from. Kids can be cruel so I would assume that’s why your not keen on her wearing a bikini. There are bikini’s that cover alot of the belly only leaving a couple of cms of waist on view. Maybe try them?

  • When you don’t have an issue with a bikini and your child (with whatever body she has) is happy to wear a bikini, I would let her. I would be very hesitant to make clear to her that it’s not a good look.

  • I thought you were asking if we thought a bikini was appropriate for such a young girl, but you’re worried about her size being in a bikini. Harsh! Firstly, I don’t think a bikini is appropriate for young girls. A tankini is the briefest I would go. And then I would insist she wore a tshirt for sun protection.

  • I’d encourage her to wear a rashie shirt for sun protection.

  • I’d maybe say let’s go buy another pair as a backup

  • I’d probably not comment as there’s no way at that age to make it tactful.

  • I think its amazing that your daughter has the confidence to wear a bikini! Encourage this behaviour!
As long as it is a suitable style for her age then there should be no problem.
I understand your fears regarding bullying & kids can be cruel but if your daughter has confidence in herself than so should you.

  • I don’t think you should discourage her wearing it if it’s a weight issue. If she’s happy to wear it, and it’s suitable for a 10 yo girl to wear, let her go for it. Focussing on her weight will give her body image problems later on

  • Also; what is the definition of ‘what looks good’?

  • It sounds like your daughter has confidence and is comfortable with herself. Good body image and good health and being active is important; especially when young girls are saturated with images of ‘perfect’ body types. Being active is more important than how she ‘looks’ in a bikini.

  • Thats a really hard situation as you dont want her to be teased by other kids if she is a little big. Maybe try for sun safety stance instead

  • I’m a bit surprised by all the comments. I would let her wear a bikini. She is only 10 and there is plenty of time for her slim down once she reaches puberty. You’re right to teach her healthy food choices. Is she involved in sports etc. If she isn’t a sporty kid, then just make sure she exercises in other ways such as regular walks with you, swimming, etc. Also make sure snacking in your house is healthy, because its definitely a problem in our house at times and then we all have to rein it in and get back to sensible eating. Good luck to her and I really can’t understand why others are so against bikinis!

  • I wouldn’t let my daughter (if I had one) wear a bikini. I don’t think they are appropriate.

  • we’re a no bikini family. Doesn’t matter what size. One pieces are very nice.

  • Why not try a tankini …. Same idea but a little less belly.
