The most popular baby names for 2016 – so far- has been released.

One of the largest baby name sites online, Nameberry, has released the list, which sees old-school baby names making a strong comeback.

Olivia topped the list for girls, Amelia in second place and Charlotte coming third.

The boys list sees Ezra as number one, with Asher running close in second place.

Overall, Olivia was the most popular name worldwide, but when broken down by country Amelia proved more popular in the US and UK. Australia and New Zealand parents preferred Olivia.

The site, which gets over 20 million hits a year on its name pages, compiled the list based on the names that have gotten the most views so far in 2016.

Whilst some of the names maybe on the rise overseas, so far names such as Ezra haven’t seen a spike in popularity here.

The NSW Government Popular Baby Names generator for instance, which displays information on baby name trends since the 1900s, has no records of the name Ezra.

The tool displays information on the top 1,200 names for babies in NSW, meaning Ezra hasn’t been registered enough to be captured.

Also shared on the popular name lists are names that have made the top 100 for the first time in 2016 – having been seemingly unpopular before.

For girls these names included the Shakespearean Ophelia and Juliet, and well as Amara, Molly, Jade, Lily and Anouk.

New names to the top 100 for boys included Abel, Wesley, Isaiah, Lucian, Gideon and Augustine.

  • I haven’t seen my grandsons name on any of these ‘most popular names’ articles. He was called Riley, in memory of my mother in law, and James, for his mums grandfather. Names given with thought and love, not cos they’re the flavour of the month
