The most popular forms of contraception include, oral contraception, followed by condom use, and vasectomy – but are they the most effective?

Very few women use long-acting reversible contraception, such as contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs), which are the most effective in preventing pregnancy, reports ABC news.

The effectiveness of different contraceptives ranges from more than 99 per cent (less than one pregnancy per 100 women in one year) to 76 per cent (up to 24 pregnancies per 100 women in one year).

That’s because many contraceptive methods are affected by human error, such as forgetting to take the pill, or putting a condom on incorrectly.

Birth control may be highly effective with “perfect use” (when it is used correctly all the time), but significantly less effective as “typically used” (what generally happens in real life).

With no method of contraception, 85 per cent of women in their 20s will become pregnant within 12 months.

  • For me the pill was the best. Then i started having on going bleeding so my Doc took me off the pill. They did scans and tests and everything seemed fine so I had the Mirena fitted but things became worse. I was sent for another scan and the guy offere me a viginal scan which he said was more accurate. I said I didnt mind as long he was wasnt concerned about the blood. He was fine with it so we did that and thank goodness we did as he discovered several tumours and a polyup. As it turns out the tumours were not a concern but the polyup was precancerous. I was in hospital for a hysterectomy 3 weeks latter and that was the end of any thoughts or concerns about becoming pregnant.

  • The contraceptive pill – always! I never got pregnant on it, even on the odd occasion when I forgot to take it.

  • Depending on the age of the lady and other circumstances they don’t cut and tie the tubes – they put clips on them. They are not 100%. I know a lady who got pregnant when one of her clips came open.

  • It’s a good thing that there are so much more healthy and safe options available nowadays.

  • You could only get the birth control pill when I was young. I never remembered to take it at the same time every day. I was just lucky I didn’t fall pregnant earlier

  • I use the hormonal IUD and I love it. Once it’s in I can forget about it for 5 years. I love it.

  • Now can they do a study on the adverse side effects of certain contraceptives. I would be very interested in that study.

    • For sure – it is best to have both studies and for women to be able to weigh up their preferred option for birth control.

  • No contraception is 100% effective. They all have pros and cons and must be used correctly.

  • An interesting study and results.

  • I personally have found the Implanon the most effective for birth control. I fell pregnant three times being on the pill so it clearly wasn’t working for me
