This is terribly sad to read, a woman who allegedly tried to poison her young son has been charged after a nearly three-year long investigation.

Again is it about lack of support for parents?

Authorities were alerted in October 2014 when the seven-year-old was admitted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with breathing difficulties.

He was treated for suspected poisoning after deteriorating with sepsis, reports 9 news.

Family and Community Services placed the young boy in alternative care as detectives from the Child Abuse Squad investigated.

Police say officers arrested the 35-year-old Sydney woman at Penrith Police Station on Friday 9 June.

She was charged with using poison to endanger life and granted strict conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday.

If you need help at all please contact Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (for young people aged 5 to 25) OR Lifeline 13 11 14.

If you are struggling as a parent and feel you need support here are a few resources you could try to reach out to:

  • Friends – support from friends might be less complicated and emotional than support from family.
  • Local people – you could try people from your child care centre, kindergarten or school, a local club or a support group.
  • Colleagues at work or people you meet studying or training – they can take your mind off parenting for a while and might also be able to help out sometimes.
  • Counsellors or other professionals – they can offer help and neutral advice without any emotional involvement.
  • Online or telephone hotlines or counselling – this might be good if you need to spend a lot of the time at home or just need someone to listen once in a while.
  • Local doctor or medical/health centre.

  • wow this is really very disturbing. hope that the child will be okay in the end and that the parent gets some real help there as it is needed.

  • I hope the young boy doesn’t have ongoing medical problems as a result of the poisoning. I know of one case where the person – now an adult still has medical problems related to him being poisoned about 20 years ago. The main issue for the guy is brain damage but here is other medical issues too

  • what a horrible thing to do to you own child – I hope the little boy has a long and happy life with people that will love him and I hope his mother rots in jail!

  • Terrible thing for the child to have to endure. Obviously no maternal instinct kicked in with the mother – seems like another person who shouldn’t have a child to rear.

  • There is definitely a lack of support. I’m sending my son to kinder next year and I’m practically counting the minutes until I finally get a couple of days a week break. I love him so much but I’m going out of my mind. I’m either at work work or at work at home.
