A US mum will spend seven days in jail for refusing to vaccinate her son.

Rebecca Bredow was sentenced after ignoring a judge’s order to let the 9-year-old boy be immunised.

Her ex-husband, the boy’s father, has been awarded temporary custody in order to get his son vaccinated, reported Yahoo.

The woman told a judge in the Oakland County Court that it was against her beliefs to immunise her children, The Sun has reported.

“I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don’t believe in,” she said.

The mother-of-two was sentenced on Wednesday for contempt of court after flouting a court order last week to have her son vaccinated, reports BBC.

She and her ex-husband decided at the time of their child’s birth that they would space out and delay jabs for their son.

The couple separated in 2008, according to ABC News, but they shared parental custody and the father still wanted the boy vaccinated.

Judge Karen McDonald said the boy had two parents and “Dad gets a say.”

Do you think the mum should have been given a jail sentence?

  • MoM, please don’t start resorting to click bait headings. You guys are a good enough website without it. Simply saying “after” instead of “for” would still have enticed people to read the article.

  • Yes I sure do – any one who doesn’t vaccinate their child should face a jail sentence as well.

  • Yes! As the judge said – the boy has two parents not just one and clearly they had decided that they were going to get the boy vaccinated, they just wanted to space them out, well sounds like she’s just changing her tune and deliberately trying to be difficult. I’m sorry but you can’t ignore the ruling of a judge, aside from the fact that not vaccinating a child puts them at risk.

  • Good. But the title is a little misleading. She wasn’t jailed for refusing to vaccinate her child. She was jailed for refusing to follow a court order.

  • I’m not sure a jail sentence was necessary but she was warned what would happen if she didn’t do as instructed. Hopefully she doesn’t take her anger out on her son once he has been vaccinated

  • Vaccination is so important. I agree with the judge.she had a choice. She has to put up with the consequences

  • I think a jail sentence is a bit much.

  • The article doesn’t state why this mother was so against vaccinating her child. The judge was right tho. He made a ruling, mum ignored it. She would have known the consequences of ignoring the judge. She chose jail time over vaccibating her son. A bit harsh maybe, but it’s what she chose. All vaccines in Australia are necessary and perfectly safe. There is no evidence to prove otherwise, just hearsay. You’re not just endangering your child’s life, it’s everyone it will eventually affect

  • Jail time might be a bit severe, but surely both parents should have some say.

  • I think the jail sentence is over the top, but whenever a parent is putting either their child or the community in danger, there must be an over-riding decision.

  • Depending on what type of vaccination it was would determine whether I agree or not with the decision … but a jail sentence for the mum helps neither her nor the child!

  • A jail sentence is way over the top, however an un vaccinated child is a danger to them self and society

  • gee, a jail sentence is a bit harsh. That’s not good keeping the children away from their Mum and sending her to jail, this is more harmful than good.

  • This is just crazy, keeping a mother away from the child because she is trying to do what she believes is right for the child is just wrong. Some vaccines are truly unnecessary and dangerous, you only have to look at the real evidence and the toxic ingredients. I feel sad for the child who will not understand why his mum was taken away from him. Good on her though for standing up for her beliefs.

    • I agree with you. There’s actually no freedom of choice in this regard.

      • All vaccines in Australia are necessary and safe. To tell people they’re not is ridiculous, there’s nothing to back these claims up. Without vaccines, there would be increases in diseases that are cruel and life threatening. I think maybe jail time was a bit harsh, I’m sure she was aware of the consequences of ignoring the judges decision tho. So really, she CHOSE to be separated from her kids by doing so

  • A court order is a court order and if you violate that order then generally you can expect either a fine, a warning or a sentence.

    • I agree – it is a court order and the mum said she would rather spend time behind bars for her beliefs. The court and the mum both followed through with their position.
