A young mother has been charged after she was allegedly caught red-handed by police performing burnouts in a shopping centre car park with her 10-month-old baby in the car.

The incident happened in Sydney’s southwest on Friday night.

It was around 10.50pm when police say officers spotted the 23-year-old woman performing a “large burnout” in an illegally modified Holden Calais.

Officers stopped the car and, while speaking to the driver, noticed a 10-month-old baby in the backseat.

The woman, who was found to hold a P2 licence, was issued a Field Court Attendance notice for the offence of aggravated burnout and is due to appear in Livepool Local Court on Wednesday, 17 July.

The woman was also fined $561 for driving a prohibited vehicle, $263 for not displaying P-plates, and $112 for not carrying her licence, which was also suspended.

Her excuse?

“I just happened to go over a speed hump and put my foot down, I wasn’t doing a big burnout, I know I stuffed up,” she told Nine News.

Her partner also offered an apology adding what they did was “stupid”.

“We could have hurt or even killed somebody, but you know… We are very, very sorry and we want every young person out there to just take care on the road,” he said.

  • It was her partner who apologised and made the comment, not the Mum. Obviously a very thoughtless irresponsible Mum especially as she had a baby in the car. I wonder if the woman knew if the car was illegally modified (did she think those done were legal). It is her responsibility to make sure she has her “P” plate showing on her car. She will also be charged court coats in additional to the fines already given.

  • Hopefully a lesson is learned and they don’t put people at risk again.

  • Very stupid, but at least she acknowledges it.

  • There is no excuse for that!! I hope she got her car taken off her! The fact that she even tried to make excuses shows she’s not in the slightest bit sorry.

  • Lesson learnt I think.

  • I hope she never does something like that again. It’s very fortunate she was caught so she could learn her lesson before anyone got hurt.

  • Poor effort for an excuse

  • I hope she wouldn’t do this regularly with a child in the car.

  • Some people just don’t get it. They risk not only their lifes and babies but other peoples lifes too. It’s all well and good to say sorry, but sorry won’t bring back people if you kill someone. Hopefully she learnt her lesson.

  • They are just sorry that they got caught more like it. Disgusting behavior, but even worse there was a baby involved

  • The lamest excuse I have ever heard. She should have had the book thrown at her – endangering the life of her tiny baby and also any innocent people that could have been around!

  • Luckily they realize that what they did wasn’t very clever!
