A former Australian Muay Thai champion sparked debate after she posted a controversial video online of her fierce training session while 39 weeks pregnant.

Caley Reece posted the video on her Facebook page, while she can be seen kicking and punching with force, Caley defended her high-intensity training claiming pregnancy wasn’t a reason for her to stop doing what she loved, reports Daily Mail.

‘There’s so much I can’t do such as switch left kicks, lots of punches in a row, any power, any speed, quick footwork or changes, but that doesn’t mean I have to give up. It simply means I make do with what I have,’ she said.

While some jumped at the opportunity to congratulate her, others were quick to criticise her active lifestyle.

The six-time world Muay Thai champion, defended herself.

‘People ragging out on previous videos saying I’m going to fall over, trip on my belly, get punched accidentally, too much on the belly, so what if I got punched in the face – my baby isn’t growing in my head,’ she said.

‘There is no more danger here than there is power walking or twisting in a pool.

‘For those that have no idea, we do not pivot with our stomachs in Muay Thai, we turn and pivot with our hips and feet.’

Caley said her Muay Thai partner Darren, who is also her husband, communicated every step along the way, which reduced the risk.

‘Daz is calling every single thing so we both know exactly what is happening at all times,’ she said.

She said Darren was not only her husband, but the reason for her success.

Do you think she endangered her unborn child?

  • bloody hell… you’re supposed to exercise throughout your entire pregnancy. Better for your labour and for recover after.

  • No of course she isn’t endangering it. If you are fit and healthy there is nothing to stop you continuing what you had previously been doing, whether it’s riding horses, or doing this sport. It is only an endangerment if you decide to take up an activity for the first time at 38 weeks.

  • Seems to me she knows her limits. To stay fit and in such good condition will probably help her when she delivers her baby.

  • Her husband is probably just defending the punches in his glove to protect his hand. That baby is being shaken around. She may have a very restless baby and have ro carry him/her around until he/she gets used to continued slow movements.

  • I guess if she’s used to thus level of physicality it’s not so bad. I do think some mums like to push it too hard during pregnancy. I enjoyed taking it easy

  • I guess it depends on your level of fitness before you got pregnant. I wouldn’t start strong physical activity while pregnant as I am not heavily into fitness. I kept playing tennis and walking and a bit of running while pregnant and that was perfectly fine. It’s up to every individual what they are capable of doing!

  • I hope she’s not putting the baby’s welfare at risk.

  • I think she is snart enough to know what her body can handle

  • I find it very scary. It’s like a 39 weeks pregnant woman would go horse riding!
