A Mumsnet user “thought of” a brilliant name for a baby girl so she shared her suggestion for other parents to also consider. However, it was not well received.

“I thought of this lovely girl’s name today so thought I would share as I’ve never heard it as a name or even suggested as a name. “TREE”. It would also be a lovely middle name.”

“It just popped into my head and I love it,” she continued. “I prefer shorter names though so dislike Teresa. I’m not having any more [children] though so thought I would share as it is never suggested as a nature theme name and sounds fresh, simple and modern.”

She added, “I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste but I think it would be the type one could to grow to like.

“It is short. Ends with the popular ‘ee’ sound. Rhymes with many other popular names. Has nice imagery attached. Strong positive values tied to it.

“Anyway it popped into my head so I thought I would share it here in case anyone was interested as I have an interest in names and have never heard of it before.

“No need to post that you disagree as I know many would dislike it straight away as it is unusual.”

She was soon slammed with responses of how ridiculous the name suggestion was.

“I’m sorry but it sounds ridiculous to me, perhaps a sibling named Leaf?”

“Will you eventually have a son and call him branch?”

“This would be child abuse OP.”

“There is a reason why you’ve never heard of or met anyone called Tree.”

“Please God no. What’s wrong with normal names.”

“Are you out of yours op?” (made me laugh, hahaha!)

” Not to everyone’s taste” Are you for real? That’s because it’s ridiculous, poor child if it grows up with that name.”

“Are you trunk?”

“It’s daft. Poor kid – don’t do it. She will hate you when she’s 13.”

“No one is cruel enough to bestow such a ridiculous name on a child, surely!?”

A Queensland mum is also going viral after revealing the name she chose for her daughter.

Jessica, from the Gold Coast, submitted her little girls name to be featured in a magazine, responding to the question was ‘What inspired your child’s name?’.

“I’ve always loved the name Kaitlyn but hated how popular it was. So when I found out I was having a girl, my husband suggested we replace the ‘ait’ with Roman numeral symbol for eight! Now our daughter is truly unique,” she wrote in her submission.

“KVIIILyn” – VIII being number 8 in roman numerals. (K8Lyn)

The photo of the magazine page, along with the rather unfortunate name, has since gone viral on Facebook this week.

Many comments accuse the mum of cruelty and plain stupidity.

  • I personally wouldn’t use either names. KVIIIlyn will be very confusing her whole life

  • The KVIIIlyn one would be a pain for others to pronounce and spell. Tree, I don’t mind it. It’s not as bad as many others.

  • not a fan but it isn’t my child so my opinion doesn’t matter

  • I think some parents don’t consider the lifetime of bullying their children will receive as a consequence. People are trying too hard to be different these days.

  • Seriously? Maybe they were having a lend of us all ?

  • Personally I wouldn’t call my child Tree. I’d be thinking about the child’s future and what sort of affect it would have on her. Some unique names can be nice but others are just simply too way out and over the top.

  • What the heck is wrong with Tree? How offensive are those people to Vietnamese people named Tri, pronounced the same way, every new name sounds stupid at first, say your own name enough times, after a while it doesn’t even sound like a real word lol

  • Do not like ‘unique’ names – how about thinking how your child will live with it before you give it to them – and always look at the initials of their name before you give it to them too. Think about the name Deborah Anne Mary Nelson and then decide if you might change it around.

  • I hate “unique” names. Majority of the time they just make me think the parents are too immature to be responsible for another human.

  • I personally wouldnt choose either of these names, but we are not the childs parents

    Reply

  • Neither of those names are for me I’m afraid, but each to their own I guess…

  • I wouldn’t call it child abuse, but I think it’s important to think about the child carrying this name and how it could be received by others and the struggles this could cause.

  • I agree that some of the responses were uncalled for, but in saying that what’s to say this is the response that the mother wanted?
I find the name ‘Tree’ a bit over the top but I wouldn’t throw abuse at someone about it.

  • Some unique names are just taking things too far. I don’t think ‘tree’ is that bad compared to some names!

  • I’m sure there a lot of names that mean tree and as a middle name, well it’s fair gain. I’m sure names like Wednesday, Tuesday, summer etc were all considered weird but here we are. I’ve heard a heap worse for a name and wouldn’t go so far as labeling it child abuse!
