A Perth mum has shared her disgust at the unhealthy Back to School promotion Nestle has on display at her local Coles supermarket.

Taking to the Nestle Facebook page to share her thoughts on the promotion she wrote, “So this is what you consider a good promotion of food for parents for ‘Back to School’??? Shame on you for targeting parents in this way!!”

She added, “Sweetened condensed milk, choc drops and sour gum lollies are sooooo far from back to school staples, I’m totally lost as to why they are even there and as for the majority of the rest – THIS is why we have an obesity epidemic!!!

“Preying on the uneducated and using your corporate pull to sway the star ratings (there is no other way that Milo could have a 4.5 star rating) is flat out disgraceful!

“But profits trump the health of our nation doesn’t it???? And to jump on your FB page to see your cover page as ‘Nestle for healthier kids’???? You have got to be pulling our legs!!

“Is this back to school stand your way of supporting healthier kids????”

Nestle responded to the post saying: “Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We’ll do out best to address each point you’ve raised.

“As you can see in the main image at the top of the banner, we’re highlighting products like Milo ready to drink, Uncle Toby’s Muesli bars, and Maggi noodles as options for the lunchbox. We’re not too sure which store this is, but we don’t make gummy worms. The placement of these products may come down to your local store, and we appreciate you bringing to our attention.

“Products like Nestlé Sweetened Condensed milk or Baker’s Choice Choc Bits are staples for the pantry for recipes like Chocolate Chip biscuits etc. We’re not suggesting them as an everyday food, but they do come in handy for parents making a batch as a treat for the lunchbox or after school.

“We stand by Milo as a great way to not just encourage children to drink milk, but to boost energy, protein, calcium and other vitamins and minerals in their diets.”

An unimpressed Adelaide mum and blogger recently shared this image from her local supermarket as well.

  • If this is what makes you angry and you have nothing bigger to bitch about then life is pretty darn good isnt it. Dont make a fuss….just keep on walking,.

  • Seriously, everyone has some sort of negative opinion!
Glad they responded the way they did. We don’t have a great obesity problem here compared to places like the US so I don’t know what she’s going on about… maybe she should take it into her own hands to prepare things for her kids that she thinks is more appropriate than their suggestions!!!

  • I think Nestle gave a very well rounded response to this complaint. Yeah, it’s not the healthiest of displays. But seriously, if you don’t like it, move along and don’t buy any of it. Simple. Quit looking for your five minutes of fake fame

  • Seriously, just don’t buy it if you want your kid to be healthy. They arent forcing you to buy their products and last I checked, Nestle’ didnt go into every supermarket and stock those stands themselves. It is marketing for the Supermarket as much as it is for Nestle’.

  • Does it force people to buy it against their will? No. Does it make it easier for busy parents who do buy such snacks to stock up for school? Yes. It says “Back to school made easy” not “Back to school this is healthy”. Buying fruit is always easy.

  • I agree with Nestle that they only send the displays and it’s up to the store what to put on them. I worked in a supermarket for over 35 years and it was always up to the store what to put on display. I also agree with Mel that it isn’t all healthy products. It all boils down to making money and nothing else.

  • Most of them are full of sugar but as an occasional treat it’s OK. Rollups are the worst, just sticky sugar that sticks to your teeth! Cavities in a roll I say.

  • So many snacks aimed at kids are so full of sugar its not funny. My daughter loves rollups after seeing other kids at school with them but I refuse to buy them because they are nothing but sugar and no real fruit at all.

  • Well she’s not wrong. However no one’s putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it. Commonsense, no need to get angry about it.

  • If you dont like them, dont buy them
    Plain and simple.

  • I agree in that if you don’t like it, don’t buy it, keep on walking…

  • The first few weeks of school is when my kids got the “special” treat lunch box snacks. If you don’t like it don’t buy it..

    Reply

  • Simples. Don’t buy their items.

  • My kids take fruit to school so these displays don’t do much for us. I always believed star ratings were bought so never pay attention to them anyway.
