Michigan mum arrested after she disciplined her daughter by taking away her iPhone 6.

“I was just being a mum, a concerned parent and disciplining my daughter,” Jodie May told Wood TV.

However Jodie’s ex said that he was the one that owned the phone and he did not agree with it being taken away from his daughter. He filed a complaint with the County Sheriff’s Office, accusing Jodie of stealing the phone.

The complaint lead to Jodie getting arrested in May and charged with larceny under $200. If found guilty the mother could have spent up to 93 days in jail.

Minutes before Jodie’s trial was supposed to begin, the prosecutor told the judge that circumstances had changed.

“I’ve had an opportunity to discuss this case with the victim in this case, or at least the person we believed owned the property,” she said, before explaining that new evidence now suggested that April, Jodie’s daughter, did own the phone, and her mother was well within her rights to confiscate it as a disciplinary measure.

“The mother defendant being the mother of the minor child, I believe that changes the case significantly,” the assistant prosecutor said. “Therefore we’re requesting that the charges be dismissed.”

“I think it’s ridiculous,” the mum said. “I can’t believe I had to be put through it, my daughter had to be put through it, my family. I’m very surprised, but I’m very happy with the outcome.”

  • Not a pretty action of the ex, accusing Jodie of stealing his phone from their daughter.
I think the mother was well within her rights to confiscate it as a disciplinary measure indeed.

  • This is terrible that the parent is arrested for taking the iPhone parents have lost their rights

I didn’t even think kids could own a phone until they could legally enter into a contract

  • So stupid. If parents can’t discipline their children no wonder they turn into selfish brats.

  • Glad that common sense prevailed in the end.

  • I can imagine this was a very stressful experience to go through and it was more a case of conflict between the to ex-es, then it was about the mum being arrested because of confiscating the daughters phone.

    • Seems terrible all round and not good for keeping things civilised.

  • Such a dreadful waste of police time and clogging up the legal system. Would have been a dreadful experience.

  • This is just a waste of everyone’s time.

  • So it was really to do with the ex not the daughter.

    • I don’t think so. The article states the Mum disciplined her daughter. Obviously her daughter did or said something she didn’t approve of.
If it was about the Dad she has the right to not permit the phone on her property. The fact remains he bought the phone and gave it to his daughter. Unless he only loaned it to her, it is hers, not his.
