A Perth mum is demanding an explanation after her son was picked up from day care sporting a shocking head injury.

One-year-old Xavier Cox had a large graze and was bleeding from his forehead.

Carers initially told Darlene Cox her son had fallen late Monday afternoon, but then she claims they changed their story, saying a carer had been holding two children when she accidentally dropped the boy, reports 9 news.

“I hadn’t had a phone call or anything… I said what’s happened to my baby?”

Darlene claims initially she was told he had tumbled while sitting down, but it wasn’t until she spoke to her four-year-old daughter that the complete story came out.

“The lady said: ‘I’m really sorry, I was nursing (him) on a chair… some other girl’s called me and I’ve lost concentration and I’ve accidentally dropped him’,” Darlene said.

The mother-of-four says she was never called or notified of the incident, nor did they call a doctor or bandage the boy up.

“Not one of the girls were heading to the office to call me, there was one girl with my baby with an ice pack … there was no one in the office.”

“They were trying to reassure me it’s an accident, it’s an accident.”

“My point is she’s qualified to work with babies… you just don’t drop a baby when someone calls your name,” Darlene said.

The Department of Communities has confirmed it’s been notified of the incident and is currently undertaking an investigation.

Poor little bubba :(

  • This is just awful. It reminds me why I made the choice to stay home from work to raise my boys.

  • How could they not call her?!

  • Would be complaining to the director of the daycare. They should’ve called her straight away

  • Absurd that they didn’t call the mother to notify her of what happened. And the fact that they changed stories, means they felt guilty. That looks like a terrible fall. Not even calling a doctor???
Very important to investigate what happened!!

  • Sure a good reason to demand answers ! His injuries are rather serious, poor boy !

  • I would be demanding answers too! My grandson goes to childcare mon-fri and his parents get a report on every bump, scrape and argument he has. This injury looks pretty bad, I am shocked that mum wasn’t called as soon as it happened!

  • Poor little boy, that looks painful.
I’ve worked in childcare, with many kids, I dont understand how she could drop him, and depending of the injuries a phone call or incident report shouldve been written up.

  • This is not on and a parent should have been notified immediately, regardless if they claim it was an accident.

  • Poor little fella. It’s so hard as a parent to leave your child in someone else’s care and when something like this happens it must make it almost impossible.

  • Holding two kids at once surely has to be against some kind of regulations

  • That’s nasty, poor little thing

  • Yeah, this really bad behaviour. I’d be at least as cranky about how they managed things as the accident.

  • Poor darling. They should have been honest straight up and contacted the mum or dad. They way this has been handled is terrible

  • Even if it was an accident, the after-care was sadly lacking. Surely you would call the parent/caregiver, a paramedic etc. I hope this mum took her little boy to the hospital for a proper health check, scans etc.
