A young mother is calling for a brand of sunscreen to be pulled off the shelves after her son was badly burned while wearing it.

However the company involved says the problem is not the product, claiming instead people are not using it correctly, reports 7 news.

Natasha Henwood said her two-year-old son, Lucca, was left burned and blistered after wearing Banana Boat’s ‘Simply Protect Kids’ SPF 50 sunscreen.

The Australian mother said she applied two coats of the sunscreen before the toddler spent two hours outside.

“It says that it meets all the standards for Australia and they’re very high standards, but it’s not the first case,” Ms Henwood said.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration says it tested 94 sunscreens last year and found no issues with quality or safety.

Banana Boat has offered Ms Henwood a refund but is reassuring customers its products meet high standards.

It says no sunscreen, even SPF 50 plus, provides 100 per cent protection.

“Always combine it with other measures like hats and appropriate clothing,” Professor Damian said.

Only last week we shared that a four-month-old NZ baby suffered ‘horrific’ blister burns after an SPF 50 Cancer Society sunscreen failed to protect him. Read more HERE.

  • So many people complain about this brand but yet I have an adult male friend who is pale skined and he swears by it.

  • This issue is not going away. This child may have been super sensitive to the ingredients. You need to understand the full circumstances of how and when it was applied, who long spent in the sun, etc. Not okay for this poor child, but really tricky when the sunscreen meets all the standards.

  • I know a boy whose Mum pit some on him because they were going to go out but changed their decision and stayed inside at home. It also was Banana Boat Kids Sunscreen but was SPF 30+. His skin where it had been applied went almost fire truck red. He was taken to the Dr. as it looked more like a skin disease of some type. Treatment was child size does of antihistamine. I saw photos of the “burns” sent to the childcare centre with a message to make sure they weren’t also using that one.

  • Oh how horrid. I saw this on the news the other night. Poor little child.

  • I remember hearing some bad things about Banana Boat and burns a few years back. Very disappointing.

  • Was the child not in a protective shirt? Sunscreen just helps it is not going to stop burning completely. Kids wipe and scratch and rub and relying on sunscreen is completely naive.

  • Too many people are relying on the sunscreen to stop the burning. We need to cover up with a hat and loose long sleeve shirt. Water can affect these products, so keep an eye on your children and be careful what time of the day it is.

  • The problem with a lot of sunscreens on the market is they are full of toxic ingredients, use a natural one or just cover up. We still need some time in the sun for our health but putting heaps of toxins on your skin just to stay out in the sun longer is just plain silly. Going a little red is the sign to get in the shade quick smart.

  • I am allergic to all sunscreens, so therefore take the proper precautions.

  • I am wary of alot of sun creams as there have been a few bad stories the last couple of years. I pay a bit more and buy one from a health food store and its wonderful

  • I agree it has to be used with other measures.
