Mum shares her outrage after discovering her child’s school is giving kids detention for dancing.

A mum turned to the forum Mumsnet to share her rant when she read the announcement from her child’s school on Facebook.

“I’ve just been reading on my Facebook and it seems my DC (darling child) school has decided to give out detentions to any child caught doing the floss dance…or any other dance from the Fortnite game. (Apparently there are loads)

“How bl#$dy silly is this?! Fair enough if the kids are doing it in class but detentions are being given out to anyone doing it at any time! Seriously??

“My DS (darling son) is always doing the dance at home and I have even tried it myself (with great failure!)… it’s a bit of fun.

“Nothing harmful in it whatsoever…but because it’s from a game that isn’t “age appropriate” it is being banned in school.

Any one else’s school doing this? World has gone mad.”

It seems like it is not the only school that has banned the dance move

Many parents commented that their child’s school had also banned it because kids were doing it in class and it IS very annoying.

– “I get it – my son flossed everywhere, all the time until it was banned at school and at several after school activities – where the adults in charge had had enough of them not concentrating on what they were actually supposed to be doing. I totally agree with them. He can floss on his own time (and does, it never stops – although we seem to have moved on to ‘orange justice’ of late). No problem with the dancing, big problem with the not listening..”

– “The way DS2 explained it to me was that the floss dance in Fortnite is used as a taunt. So I can see why schools won’t want children doing it, even if some/most are just doing it purely for fun as it has the potential to escalate.”

– “Fortnite is very addictive and schools kids should not be playing it. School is right to ban it if parents are so stupid as to allow them to play it.”

– “I was in school doing observations last week and it was bloody everywhere and horribly irritating. Every classroom had kids flossing at some point, from Reception up to Year 6, with lots of them doing it seemingly without even realising. Telling them to stop doing it is wasting teachers’ time and is thoroughly exasperating, so banning it across the whole school day seems the sensible thing to do, then there is no grey area of “I was on the way to breaktime,” or “the bell had already gone.” A blanket ban with a clear consequence makes total sense, that way it isn’t open to interpretation and everyone knows the rules.”

If you are not sure what the floss dance is you can check out the video below.

My 9 year old son does this all the time too. I had NO IDEA it had originated from Fortnite?

Do you think the school went too far by banning it?

  • Just because a child is doing the dance does not mean that they have played this fortnite game.

  • If the kids really want to do this dance, tell them it can only be done at home or make it for PE. If they have to do this it may stop them. I do agree it can be very disruptive and the classroom is only for learning.

  • How bizarre, I had to watch the vid to see what it actually was…..surely just yet another faze?

  • Any sort of bullying / teasing should be stopped. If a dance was the instrument/weapon being used then something had to be done. Alternatively make the kids do the dance for 1 hour during active movement in PE class or something and see if they don’t get tired of it! When adults are involved in teaching something it often kills it dead!

  • Honestly, fair enough I think. I have heard about that game, not for my children, no matter how old. Kids can do the dance at home if their parents are happy with it. Just do “normal” dancing at school!

  • The school have banned them for a reason so let her dance at home.

  • It’s unfortunate that such an inappropriate game is incorporating something so fun as dancing to encourage a younger audience. However, according to the above video it seems as though the dances didn’t originate form Fortnite anyway – they have been taken from other known dances and incorporated into the game. I don’t think schools should be discouraging dancing – it’s a great form of exercise and it’s something fun, so long as it’s not during class or used to bully. My daughter loves dancing and will often break out into a dance. I do however, think that the game is a very inappropriate game from the reports that I’ve read and I will be keeping my children away from TV and games as much as I possibly can.

  • My daughter tried to teach me this dance a while ago. It’s harmless. Banning it seems ridiculous.

  • I’ve never even heard of it. Surely just ban it in the classroom? Unless the dance move is literally grinding on passersby how bad can it be? Its just a craze. It won’t last forever.

  • That’s funny, my daughter’s school is in the process of endorsing the use of an unused performing arts class room to be used at break times for anyone who wants to dance. My daughter and her friends often make up and do dance routines at school, so they asked if they could do this. I love the fact that they are in favour of it. As for the banning of that dance move it is crazy. There are far worse dance moves that they should be worried about.

  • I had no idea this dance was from Fortnite. I just thought it was the next craze after dabbing, running man… the list goes on. My son and I were reeling them off the other night. Like anything, it will disappear in time when the next fad comes along. Banning it will only make kids want to do it more. What about manage it instead and don’t allow it in the classroom!!

  • Crazes and fads come and go and this one will too!

    • Detention will probably be full for a while!

  • I read it was made up by that backpack kid.

  • Oh seriously! Get a grip. I don’t understand why Fortnite is getting such a bad rap? I have seen the game. And can safely say they are FAR worse games kids could be playing. Yes there is guns and shooting but it really isn’t life like at all. There’s the ‘battle bus’ which is literally a bus that flys through the sky that the players then sky dive from and everyone runs around dressed up in silly outfits and do funny dances. There’s even gnomes and llamas.

  • I didn’t realise it was from a game and that it was a form of taunting
