Angry mum shares how her child’s sweet treat was thrown out by a teacher.

Posting in an Australian budgeting group on Facebook, the Queensland mum asked members whether they thought it was appropriate to do this, shared Daily Mail.

‘Do you think it’s okay for a teacher to throw away an item of your child’s lunch that you packed just because it’s a “sweet” and the teacher believes it’s not fair as not every other child has a sweet?’ She wrote.

‘When I say sweet I mean anything like a chocolate biscuit, chocolate coated muesli bar, cake, chocolate mousse etc. Regardless of whether it’s fat, sugar reduced or not.’

Group members were quick to share in her anger with hundreds of commenters saying they thought the teacher was in the wrong.

Some said they should have just sent the treat home instead of throwing it in the bin.

Members agreed that although they support teaching nutrition, they think what was described in the post is just ‘shaming and hurtful’.

Do you think it is OK for a teacher to just toss out kids lunch treats?

  • I would be up at the school the very next day and demanding to see what the teacher planned to have for lunch that day. Might get to do some of my own tossing food out. But seriously …I would head to the school and would be having a few harsh words with the teacher and I would be telling her that either i send my kid with their lunch and she leaves it alone or if she feels thats not suitable then she is very welcome to take over supplying my child with lunch every day. Which option does she prefer?

  • It is not ok, at all.

  • No it’s not okay. Children are entitled to a treat and we all no what moderation is. It is an unnecessary upset for the child. The teacher could have explained too many treats are not healthy and let the child have the one that was packed for him. They have overstepped the boundary on this one.

  • The amount of trauma caused for kids by having their lunch box picked to pieces by teachers is astounding. It should be a no go zone really unless something of real safety concern. Ie peanuts.
Because parents are on different budgets and time schedules. Kids may have a big fruit serve at home but take none to school. It can get squished. Kids shouldn’t feel paranoid about eating their lunch.
And it’s the parent/child domain. Not teachers. Yes nude food is promoted and fruit/veges but overtaking lunches is not the job of the teachers. Throwing out is crossing the line.

  • I don’t think a teacher has any right to do that at all and I would be super annoyed too

  • Teachers need to concentrate on teaching and stop being the food police

  • Absolutely not okay. How dare the teacher do this? It shames the child. It crosses boundaries. It shames the family. I’m just gobsmacked by this.

  • The teacher went too far. If anything she could have returned it to the child to bring home with a note not to pack it.

  • Parents have given these rights to teachers by not doing the right things themselves with their children. Once parents have abdicated their role, they won’t be able to get it back.

  • No way, this is really over stepping the boundary!

  • Teachers are taking things too far these days, a small treat with a healthy lunch is ok. Thankfully my son didn’t have Teachers doing things like this when he was at school, they use to worry only if children didn’t have lunch with them and tied to make sure they got something to eat

  • I thought we sent our kids to school to learn not to be shamed for eating something no-one else has.

  • Gee Mom (Tracy) do you think we could have the full story and let us know what the sweet treat was???

    Reply

  • Absolutely not. I would send a complaint to the principal about that sort of behaviour.
