Mother tells of horrifying moment she discovered her baby boy had been circumcised without her consent.

A UK mum has spoken of the horrifying moment she opened her baby son’s nappy to find him covered in blood after being circumcised by her inlaws without her consent, reports Daily Mail.

The woman, from Nottingham, was so distraught that she had to leave them room and has been battling with the authorities for four years.

Three people have now been arrested, including  family GP, Dr Balvinder Mehat, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

She believes it is male genital mutilation and it should be seen in the same way as female genital mutilation.

The mother, who did not wish to be named, told the BBC: ‘I opened the nappy and I ended up having to leave the room because I felt hysterical.

‘It was just awful really, it wasn’t very nice, there was all blood there and stuff.

‘It’s even illegal to dock dogs’ tails. I’ve come home crying my eyes out thinking a dog has got more rights than my child. There’s something seriously not right with it all. You can protect a dog, you can protect a girl, but not a boy.’

Dr Balvinder Mehat has been held by police investigating the procedure after a three-month-old was operated on during a visit to his paternal grandparents, who are Muslim.

The boy’s parents are separated, with Dr Mehat alleged to have carried out the circumcision for religious reasons before the infant was returned to his mother later the same day.

The mother complained to the police about the clinician, who works at the Bakersfield Medical Centre in Nottingham, claiming her son was in obvious distress when he was handed back to her. Further details here.

In its statement, Notts Police said: Officers investigating the circumstances surrounding a circumcision conducted on a child in July 2013 have arrested three people.

‘A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

‘A 44-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

‘They have all been released pending further investigation.

‘Our enquiries are ongoing.’

Do you think the babies father and grandparents crossed the line?

  • i can’t even imagine how i would deal with this! i wouldn’t do this to my own child and i would be raging if this had happened without my consent! my gosh what a horrible thing to do to the child and the mother. i understand that this is for religious purposes but the mother did not want this done to her child and the child had no say over his body. i would need to hear a way better excuse than religion purposes!

  • I notice it happened during a visit to the paternal grandparents, no mention of the Dad taking the baby to see the grandparents. Was he present during the procedure? Did one or both the grandparents sign them? or were none signed?

  • That’s awful! Surely something can be done. What’s most disgusting is the poor little baby had no say. It’s such an outdated practice in this day and age anyway.

  • OMG i would have thought that BOTH biological parents would need to sign consent forms for something like this to take place. They should all (the father, grandparents and Dr) be charged. How disgraceful.

  • I feel so sorry firstly for this little boy, who obviously sounds like he was in a lot of pain or distress or both. And secondly, for this poor mother. As a mum it’s your inherit mode to protect your child. To have been betrayed by this little boy’s dad and grandparents would be hard to come to terms with. I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law – it is a betrayal of the worst kind if indeed she had always said she never wanted him circumcised. Of course, we don’t know the full story.

  • Did they ever! That is absolutely disgraceful and wrong!

  • OMG. They absolutely crossed the line in the worst possible way. How dare they? How dare they? I am so concerned by the lack of boundaries these days and I feel so utterly devastated for this woman and her child. I am so angry and so full of words … too many to put down.

  • Religious fanatics overriding respect for freedom and choice. This is only one reported case, imagine how many other’s there are, I hate to think. Cruel and unnecessary procedure.

  • that is truly awful – I really feel for this mum and her son. What a horrible thing to do behind her back – just disgusting

  • This is horrific- her own child? How was this allowed to happen without the mothers consent? No matter what your viewpoint on circumcision – a mother (and fathers) consent must be obtained for any medical treatment. So frightening to think this could happen without the mother of the baby knowing.

  • I would be shocked and automatically ban my inlaws from seeing my child if that is what they did to him. that’s passing the line of the parent’s boundaries. I was furious my mother took my son for a haircut without my consults. I was furious and even worst his hair cut was disgusting, I had to get him another haircut the next day. I still talk to my mother but for this boy is crossing the line way too far.

  • Yes I certainly do. They could have discussed it with her but, ultimately, it was the Mother of the child and not the paternal grandparents or the father since he was out of the picture. I’m so sorry that she had this happen to her baby boy but I’m sure it won’t stop her from loving him all the same. I hope those 3 get jail time.

  • Yes I do. What they did to that child was a violation of his rights and the rights of the parents whom, if they wished to make that decision for the son, had it taken away from them. But obviously the mother did not and yes it is total violation. I don’t believe any procedure should be performed on anyone who does not consent, especially a baby who cannot speak for themselves. The grandparents and doctor actions were radical and extreme. I support the mother and her rights to protect her son.
