Parents left furious and in total shock after a surgeon accidentally sliced their baby’s head at birth leaving her with a huge scar.

Emma Edwards’ daughter Karmen has been left with a one-and-a-half-inch scar between her eye and ear as a result of the blunder which is now being probed by health chiefs, reports The Sun.

Emma said a locum doctor, who made the incision as part of a caesarean section, later claimed she had not been told that Emma was in labour as she performed the procedure.

Emma has been left traumatised by the incident which had been followed by a series of upsetting delays to the operation.

She was also put through an agonising 24 hour wait for a plastic surgeon to come and stitch her newborn’s wound.

The 21-year-old said the mistake could have had far more serious consequences – and claimed the care she and her baby received had been a “disaster from the start to the end”.

“They rushed her off to SCBU (special care baby unit) because they had cut her head.”

“The surgeon came and spoke to me afterwards and said that it happened because I hadn’t told anyone that my waters had broken and was in labour, but I checked my medical records and it said that I had explained that.”

A health board spokesman said an internal investigation is being carried out into the incident.

  • Oh poor baby
    That’s horrible accident

  • Absolutely horrible – such a negative experience for something that should be amazing for this new mummy.

  • That is shocking. Accidents can happen but the poor baby should have been tended to immediately and any future plastic surgery free of charge to minimize the scar

  • Why did it take so long for the baby’s wound to be stitched??
The baby’s scar is deep, not like a pencil line. I very much doubt it will disappear.
She may be able to conceal it with her hair or headwear.

  • Terrible thing to have happened and the cover-up just makes it worse. She is still a beautiful baby girl and she will be able to hide the effects of the scar which won’t be so noticeable as now with clever hair styling.

  • This was meant to be a most memorable moment which it will be but for the wrong reason. I hope they get an apology for this dreadful thing that happened and can get past this. Her daughter is beautiful and no scar can ever undermine that. Congratulations

  • Oh my God. I have never ever heard of this happening before. How traumatic for the family and baby. I hope it’s investigated thoroughly and the family gets all the support they need. What should have been a wonderful experience has now been horrific for them.

  • Hopefully the internal inquiry will mean that legal justice will be done. Hopefully hair will cover the scar in the future.

  • My beautiful Grandson was born by C -section, and the Dr slipped and cut his little head as well!
He’s now 9 and the scar is definately still there, and to make things worse, the hair will not grown on the spot.
