A mother has died after being hit by a garbage truck while out walking with her child in a pram.

The pedestrian in her 50s was on the corner of May and Pittwater roads in Sydney’s northern beaches when she was struck by the vehicle about 11.30am.

She suffered critical injuries to her lower body and later died.

A NSW Police spokesman said the pram was located nearby but the baby was not injured.

A police statement advises people, “Police are investigating a fatal crash after a woman died when she was struck by a garbage truck in Dee Why this morning.

About 11.45am today (Thursday 8 February 2018) emergency services were called to Moorilla Road, Dee Why, after a pedestrian was struck.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 50s, was struck by a garbage truck and suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

A young boy was located in a pram nearby. He was not injured during the incident.

The driver of the garbage truck was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are continuing.”

Our thoughts are with her loved ones x

  • I wonder how this turned out? Did the truck drivers drug and alcohol test come back clear? Did the mum do something silly or inattentive? Sadly a little boy no longer has a mum, regardless of any other thing

  • I understood from the original media report that the lady was a Grandma, not the Mother of the baby. We have not been told the circumstances of the accident – where the woman was when the truck hit her – was she in front of the truck and the driver didn’t see her because she was down too low and close to the truck. Was the truck stationery just before the driver moved off and hit her? She obviously wasn’t holding the pram when she was hit or the pram would have been next to her.

  • Such a terrible thing to have happened, but it could have been so much worse if the baby died as well.

  • Oh my god, people vs a garbage truck and the baby survived!!! Sad for the person pushing the pram, but damn lucky for that baby

  • I understand that it was the grandmother that died, not the mother.
