A mother who left her toddler alone in the sun while in a drug-induced state, lost care of both her children.
The 42-year-old from QLD, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court on Thursday to one count of leaving a child under 12 unattended.
The charge related to a September 2015 incident in which the woman, who the court heard had been unemployed for a decade, started hallucinating after taking a combination of drugs including cannabis and Valium, reports 9NEWS.
While under the influence of the drugs, her 13-month-old child was left outside in a pram for half an hour, the court heard.
Judge Michael Burnett acknowledged her early guilty plea and otherwise good character, and handed her a 12-month probation order without recording a conviction for the crime.
It came after the court heard the incident had taken a “catastrophic” toll on the woman’s family life and resulted in the baby and another child, aged 7, being removed from her care.
“You have inflicted this great hurt to (your children) because of your selfish behaviour,” Judge Burnett said.
He implored the woman to try to become a better role model for her children and acknowledged her efforts to this effect thus far.
