Well this is something you won’t read every day! Not sure we suggest anyone does this in the near future.

According to reports a mother sent brownies to a school cake stall with breastmilk in them after running out of the ingredients she needed.

After supposedly making breastmilk brownies and selling them at her child’s school, the mother wondered why people kicked up a fuss.

“I made brownies for my school bake sale that had breastmilk in them. I didn’t have time to run to the store, and didn’t think it was a big deal (some of those kids could use the nutrition to be honest),” the post says.

“One of the other moms found out and are blowing it way out of proportion. Idk what to do!”

The post has attracted over 1000 comments on the popular page ‘Sanctimommy’ which took a screenshot and shared the original post.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s guidelines for using other people’s breast milk to feed your baby explicitly advises not to use unscreened breastmilk obtained through strangers or the internet.

“If you are considering feeding a baby with human milk from a source other than the baby’s mother, you should know that there are possible health and safety risks for the baby. Risks for the baby include exposure to infectious diseases, including HIV, to chemical contaminants, such as some illegal drugs, and to a limited number of prescription drugs that might be in the human milk, if the donor has not been adequately screened. In addition, if human milk is not handled and stored properly, it could, like any type of milk, become contaminated and unsafe to drink,” The FDA says.

What would you do if this happened at your school?

  • Oh dear! “They could use the nutrition honestly” that made me laugh so much!

  • Wow. Dont understand what goes through people’s heads sometimes.

  • nope that is just gross! i would be shocked, that’s for sure. it makes you think twice about buying random things that random people have made now

  • Quite honestly, I’d be appalled and disgusted!

  • how many of you have mistakenly picked up a jar or a bottle of milk until you realised its breast milk (off milk for my tasting) ???? i have and my friend have laughed her head off.

i wouldn’t want to eat a choc brownie with breast milk, just a lil tad overboard for me. we don’t know what she may have eaten/drank that had gotten into her breastmilk.

  • Her view is very one-sided. I can understand why people would have a problem with this.

  • who is to say that it hasn’t? who really would know what is used in the bake stall goodies? if I had already eaten it (without realising it was an ingredient) I would probably just laugh it off – not much you can do after the fact – if it was on a sign on the baked goods (and I actually took the time to read it) I would probably pass on purchasing!

  • There’s no guarantee that the Mum’s milk has a lot of nutrition in it. We only have her word for that. We don’t know how fussy the Mum is with her hygiene either.
Why didn’t the Mum get more milk on her way either to the school or on the way home

  • How can people even compare this to using milk from a shop? Milk that is sold at the supermarket is pasturised to make it safe to drink. God only knows how her milk was stored or what it came into contact with before it made it to the brownies. Let alone the risk of passing on any diseases she might have. Who runs out of milk when they know they have to bake something for their kids school anyway? She just seems like a huge attention seeker.

  • I don’t understand where the fuss is about. We drink breast milk from a cow daily, but object against breast milk from a human being ?

    • Hi Ellen,
Unless you live on a farm and drink cows milk straight from the source than there is a real difference. Store bought milk has been pasteurised/homogenised … Louis Pasteur invented pasteurised milk way back when and thank God he did.
This women could potently harm someone.

  • I would not like to eat those brownies!

  • I don’t think I would be happy to find out like that.

  • If they didn’t get sick I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Kids eat all sorts of stuff from coal, dirt and millipedes, surely this couldn’t be any worse and it was then cooked. I doubt I would choose them off a cake stall if I knew but it’s done now…..move on I say.

  • There must be transparency in foods sent to school for all reasons including allergies. Ingredients should be listed and I am not surprised that some people were upset. Cow’s milk and other milk is processed and screened unlike breast milk.

    • It comes down to knowledge and consent and people do have the right to know what they are consuming.
