Mum asks for help to relieve her terrible Sciatica pain during Pregnancy.

“Hi MoM, just wondered if anyone ever suffered from sciatica during pregnancy and if so, should I see a chiro or physio? I’m 20 weeks pregnant with No. 3 and the pain is killing me.”

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by irritation of your sciatic nerve which starts in the lumbar or lower spine and ends in the thigh. With sciatica you may have pain in your buttocks and hip that travels to your thigh.

It can be a deep, dull pain or a shooting, sharp pain. Sciatic pain can range from mild to severe. It often goes away with treatment.

Sciatic symptoms can also be caused by muscle tension and unstable joints.

Pelvic bone pain, sacroiliac (SI) joint problems, and a condition called piriformis syndrome, which is a problem with one of the muscles in the buttocks, are common causes of sciatic pain during pregnancy.

This is due to an increase in pregnancy hormones like relaxin, which can cause your ligaments, the structures that attach bones to joints, to loosen and stretch, especially in your pelvic area.

Mums share some great advice

We had some great tips come in for this desperate mum with the overall response that the best thing is to stretch and regularly massage the area.

Chloe suggested, “You can see a physio but best thing is to stretch it out if you lay on your back and bring your leg over to your side etc heat packs doing pressure points from hip down the leg. Lots of massages.”

Tanya said, ” I had it so bad i could barely walk. Was given codeine to help and was also going to physio. I was bandaged up to help. Getting in and out of bed were horrendous. Only thing i can advise is to try and stretch a bit, because your muscles will spasm when you’re trying to hold yourself so you dont have that stab pain go through. Pain relief too, wont take it away but will take the edge off so you can function, also physio to massage and help too.”

Flair said, “I saw a physio and they gave me a massage which brought some relief. Mine lasted until my little girl shifted position after a few weeks of absolute agony.”

Brooke shared, “Get a tennis ball and sit on the floor one leg straight other one cross ur leg over your other leg resting ur ankle above ur knee and put the ball under ur bum cheek where it’s sore and roll it 3 times a day this helped me immensely.”

Lana shared, “I suffered from sciatica during pregnancy. Get your partner to massage your calves. I didn’t even know what the problem was until I was walking through a store one day and a physio stopped me and told me he could tell my problem from how I walked and stood. He was the person who told my ex to massage my calves and it really does help.”

Do you have any advice? Have you been through this before?

  • I had this in my 7th pregnancy. I saw a physiotherapist, wore a belly/back brace and walked with crutches which helped heaps

  • A friend of mine has this problem too. The pshyiotherapist advised her to try swimming which she had done previously and try walking in a pool. She found the combination of the treatment and walking around in the pool helped her a lot.

  • Definitely a physio. What I thought was sciatica was actually diagnosed properly by a physio as pelvic girdle pain. The chiropractor treating me for sciatica just made it worse and the physio said he sees heaps of it.

  • I suffered from sciatica when i was pregnant with my daughter and son and it’s still with me post pregnancy 7 months later.
I find physio treatment works well and the use of a tens machine also helps.
Some days mine gets so bad my legs go numb and I usually can’t walk for a few hrs.
