Mother of murdered teenager, Tiahleigh Palmer, has launched an online attack against a young couple who gave their newborn baby the same name as her daughter.

Cyndi Palmer said Tiahleigh was a name she had invented for her daughter “specifically” and she was “beyond wild” a child born since her death had been given the same name, reports news.com.au.

In May, Tiahleigh’s foster father Rick Thorburn was given a life sentence for the 12-year-old’s murder.

In a Facebook post this week to the private #Justice4Tiahleigh Facebook group, Cyndi let rip at “little f***ing teenagers”.

She claimed they had agreed not to call their newborn child Tiahleigh, but they then appeared to have done exactly that.

“Little f***ing teenagers who think it’s fun to have babies … and then name that kid after my deceased daughter to whom they weren’t even friends for what I can only think of as attention!” she wrote.

“That wasn’t their name, that was Tiahleigh’s family to use if they chose to. That name isn’t random or common name, that name I made for Tiahleigh specifically.”

Cyndi went on to say she had contacted “the kids” and had received assurances they would not use the name Tiahleigh.

“Now the baby is born and boom. I’m beyond wild. If this was my child there would be no way I would let my child name a baby after someone who has passed, especially under such horrific circumstances.”

Some in the group didn’t share Cyndi’s fury and pointed out many children had similar sounding names.

One person called Cyndi out and said he had “no ownership” over the name and was “spreading hate to teenage girls”.

But Cyndi was having none of it. “Old enough to have a baby, old enough to be called out,” she replied. “They said they would change it which is why I am so upset.”

Does anyone really have rights to a name? (I do think they could have spelled it different out of respect)

  • Can understand the mum’s frustration – but it isn’t illegal to use the name.

  • I found at the time Tiahleigh was missing, the news reporters had trouble pronouncing her name and said it various ways. I don’t think you can prevent someone using a name – it isn’t copyrighted, just polite not to do so,

  • Beautiful name sad story but yeah as stated it is not illegal unless you pay for it

  • She’s right. They’re kids. They don’t think things like this through like an adult would. They just heard a name and liked it and decided to use it. Perhaps she could consider this as something positive after all the horror she’s endured? A new life and a new future for the name?

  • a name is a name & no one can copyright a persons name (it has been tried), i think this lady needs to move on with her life & forget about it. If we all stopped using a name that has been associated with an evil act no-one would have a name. Get a life & move on

  • Given there are others with the same name (same and different spelling) she has no right to claim she invented it. By her theory we should start banning future names if associated with something evil.

  • No one has rights to a name. It is a beautiful name and many people may want to use it however it is in poor taste too.

  • The only way to protect a name is to copyright the name and officially own it, otherwise there is no recourse.

  • She obviously responds out of grieve and hurt and reacts in somewhat unreasonable way. I don’t think she has the right to this name as if she owns it.

  • Everyone’s name is a copy of some one else’s name. She is grieving right now so people are being a lot more polite than I think they would be had she not lost her precious baby girl to horrible acts

  • If you searched the name on Facebook there are a few with the same name. I don’t think she is that original

  • I’m sure they would have meant no distress and it’s awful if it has caused her distress after what she’s been through but there is no way to stop people calling their kids whatever they want.

  • The young couple probably like the name and did not think of distressing the mother of the deceased girl.

  • I don’t think she’s being fair. The name isn’t “hers”.

  • the only way to stop someone using it is to copyright it.
