Meet the couple who live a ‘food-free’ diet and claim they survive by only eating vegetable broth or fruit a handful of times a week. Including during her pregnancy.

Akahi Ricardo, 36, and Camila Castello, 34, who live between California and Ecuador, said they have forgotten what hunger feels like and believe humans can be sustained solely by the ‘energy that exists in the universe and in themselves’, shares Daily Mail.

Mother-of-two Camila even practised a ‘breatharian’ pregnancy, only eating solids five times during the nine months she was carrying her first child.

‘Humans can easily be without food, as long as they are the connected to the energy that exists in all things and through breathing,’ Camila said.

‘For three years, Akahi and I didn’t eat anything at all and now we only eat occasionally like if we’re in a social situation or if I simply want to taste a fruit.

‘With my first child, I practiced a Breatharian pregnancy. Hunger was a foreign sensation to me so I fully lived on light and ate nothing.

‘My blood tests during all three trimesters were impeccable and I gave birth to a healthy, baby boy.’

‘Obviously, our living costs are a lot less than most families and that has allowed us to spend our money on things that really matter like travelling and exploring together.

‘It’s given us a clear sense of what we want in life. Anyone can live a breatharian lifestyle and feel the benefits. It’s not about never eating food again, it’s about understanding cosmic nourishment, not just physical nourishment, and living without limits.’

During her first pregnancy in 2011, Camila said she was open to changing her food-free lifestyle for the sake of her child’s health but said she ‘just never felt hungry’.

‘I didn’t feel the need or desire to eat solid food during the entire nine months and so I only ate five times, all of which were in social situations,’ she said.

‘And I knew my son would be nourished enough by my love and this would allowed him to grow healthily in my womb.

‘I went for regular pregnancy check-ups and my doctor confirmed the above average growth of a very healthy baby boy.’

The couple relaxed slightly after the birth of their son to allow them to enjoy food as a family, but still only ate in tiny quantities.

During Camila’s second pregnancy she ate pieces of fruit and vegetable broth but said it was ‘still a lot less than the recommended intake for a pregnant woman.

Now the couple eat three or four times a week ‘at the most’ but said they do not force breatharianism on their two children.

Akahi said: ‘We would never try to change them and we let them eat whatever they want whether that be juices, vegetables, pizza or ice-cream.

‘We want them to explore the different tastes and have a healthy relationship with food as they grow.’

Camila added: ‘Whenever I eat now, it’s not because I’m hungry. I just don’t remember that sensation.’

We certainly do not recommend this diet. Especially during pregnancy. Please consult a doctor before considering this as a dietary option.

  • this is just nonsense though but then again i can see that they only really fast here or there (every other day) and their bodies would be used to operating on minimal amounts. if they ever ate properly they would likely pile the weight on as their metabolism has changed and they would notice how much more energy that they have

  • Geeze, I’m hungry after reading this. Each to their own but definetly wouldn’t recommend this especially during pregnancy.

  • This is just unbelievable – can’t imagine a doctor letting one be a ‘breatharian’ as she calls it while pregnant.

  • wow, firstly i would guess that this would make people try it and their thoughts i bet would be lets get skinny. There has to be better stories out there then reading something like this. It’s brain washing. Im just glad their children doesn’t follow their beliefs yet. I hope they drink plenty of water! I wonder how much food they really eat in those 3-4 days and what food.

  • I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1.

  • I seriously doubt the truth of this story. However why publish it? Don’t entertain them and their dangerous ideas.

  • Doesn’t sound healthy to me. You would think you’ll get malnourished when you practice this lifestyle for a while. Amazing that her blood tests during all three trimesters were impeccable, but glad she got it checked. And I hope she has the bloods of her children checked regularly as well.

  • Surely this can’t be good for their children to grow up with this belief!

  • I do believe there is scientific proof of the need to eat food for survival and nutrition. I find this hard to fathom in a word where some people are dying due to starvation and no access to food. I saw this article in The Sun and other newspapers and these are claims. I have researched this further and some of the ideas and beliefs are disturbing to read and not scientifically proven. Thankfully they understand that the children need to eat food.

    • Oops! should read world and not word – this article still astounds me.

  • I think this very difficult to even think about let alone attempt it.
Since when can you get enough nourishment from the atmosphere.
No mention of what liquids they drink.

  • I find this hard to believe that people can do this.
, Jasmuheen, formerly Ellen Greve, is credited with starting today’s Breatharian movement. Her Prana Program advises followers to convert to Breatharianism gradually: Become a vegetarian; become a vegan; move to raw foods, then fruits, then liquids and finally prana. You replace physical food with air and light as well as metaphysical nourishment.

  • I don’t believe them at all
