A MUM has been left outraged after her pregnant sister announced that she would be naming her baby the same name as her child, for the second time!

Sharing on Mumsnet, the woman was understandably upset after her sister made the announcement.

The woman added that her sister had already copied her eldest son’s name for her daughter.

The woman explained: “I have 2 sons: Hayden and Oliver.
“DS [darling sister] had a daughter after I had Hayden and named her Hayden I didn’t care too much as she was a girl and mine was a boy. It also didn’t matter that much.

“My Oliver is 2 months and she is the 3rd trimester of her pregnancy and has announced he’s an Oliver.

“Different middle names but still!

“AIBU to think this is a bit unfair?”

Seems very odd. I wouldn’t even use the same name as my cousin (or a friend) when I heard what their baby name was, I crossed it straight off my list.

Is it ever OK to copy someone’s baby name?

  • The fact that she is using it second makes her seem like a copy cat…twice! I can’t believe that nyone would want to use the exact same names as another family member, she just looks a bit silly really. You have every right to be annoyed and upset.

  • Do hope the children don’t play together all the time – they would never know which one was being called. LOL

  • This is very strange, especially for a sister. Maybe ok for a not clse friend.

  • Seems like very strange behaviour to me. In my own family I have a cousin that is a female, but has the same name as our uncle.

  • wow that is just a little bit eerie! why would someone name their children (regardless of the sex) the exact same first names as their cousins! – something is a bit off here. You would think that they would try to be different and unique!

  • I’d want to try and understand why she is copying. There’s definitely an issue there.

  • The best way to stop name pinching is to keep the name secret till bub is born but your sister actually chose the same name for her child after your child was born first …strange very strange and even stranger is she did it twice. I would be having a word or two with her and her hubby before the pregnancy ends and she delivers.

  • that would be confusing at family gatherings so you can’t force her to pick another name. Just have to get more creative for the nicknames then lol.

  • That is just so weird and so not fair for the children. I wonder what she was thinking when doing this.

  • That would upset me too. I would try and have a chat with both partners present to see what the motives are and if possibly different names can be chosen.

  • Why is the sister copying BOTH kids’ names? Maybe one, but two? Seems like there’s something else going on. That’s not loving sibling behaviour.

  • Definitely not ok at all, we had our boy name pinched from close friends who hd thier baby first lucky for us we have 2 girls and no one had pinched the names but Ruby is one name and my SINL didn’t talk to me for 6 weeks because that was her name for her baby (she’s not pregnant) and we never told anyone our name or hd she spoken to us about it was horrible so many PETTY people I’d never copy friends or family’ baby names

  • Wow, copying BOTH kids names, that’s going a bit far! I’d be annoyed too. Surely there are enough names out there to choose from!

  • Yeah that’s a bit weird. I’d be annoyed too.

  • My Sister in law knew what name I wanted for my son and she delivered her son a couple of weeks before mine and chose the name I picked. (for the second time as well and even the exact spelling I wanted) I went into denial until the birth of my son. I’m now happy as I love the name our son has. I think it’s a very low act.

    • Really not nice. I can understand your disappointment!!
