The mum was shocked to discover that the bras were available in sizes for girls as young as six.

A US mum has criticised popular department store Nordstrom for selling padded bras for girls as young as six. Angela Fellers said on Facebook that she was shocked to see the Calvin Klein branded bras in the children’s section of the store, prompting a discussion about age-appropriate clothing for kids.

Growing Up Too Fast

A Calvin Klein sizing guide reveals that a size 6X, which Angela referred to in her post, is for a child who is 120cm tall and around 23kg, meaning that they would still be able to use a car seat and be excluded from most rides at an amusement park. Some argued that the bras could serve a practical purpose, particularly under school uniforms. “(My daughter) only got bras because her nipples would poke out through the shirt material…so the little pad was needed or she was really self conscious.” Other mums were less comfortable with the idea, saying a lot of clothing designed for primary school aged children is becoming increasingly inappropriate. “So many clothes are way too sexy for young kids!” wrote one frustrated mum.

Sending A Message

The main concern mums had about the padded bras was the message they sent to their daughters about what they should look like, before they are even old enough to worry about their development. “Every kid develops at a different rate,” an article on CafeMom said. “We never want to shame a girl for the type of bra she wears or how her breasts look. But we should also be wary of sending young girls the message that they need to worry about the size and shape of their breasts before they’re even out of a car seat.”

We completely agree. While there’s nothing wrong with a six year old wearing a crop top or a singlet with built in support under their sports top if it makes them feel comfortable, padded bras take things to a whole other level.

What age do you think girls should start wearing a padded bra? Let us know in the comments!

  • Its simple….dont buy them. When they see that they dont sell they will stop making them in that size.

  • A lot of 6 year olds wear crop tops for gymnastics etc but an actual bra I think is quite unecessary. Calvin Klein sizes are notoriously small.

  • So a girl in Grade 1 needs a padded bra, oh dear, things are really getting out of control.

  • This is far too young, and I would hope it wouldn’t even occur to kid this young to want a padded bra.

  • Padded bras for kids is NO NO NO to me, let kids be kids naturally! There are so many pedifiles as we now know so do not give them another thing sick perverted things on show. I did a lot of work with out of home adolesents and there were more than a few had been abused as little children . I went to a workshop on pedofiles and one of the responses from such a pervert when asked why he raped a child was ‘she tempted me!’ I am very angry but hope padded bras for kids are taken of the stores never to reappear again

  • Depends on the child – if you don’t like them, don’t buy them.

  • I don’t see a problem with this as long as it’s just more of a lining than a padding.

  • Yeah I don’t find this a big deal at all. Some kids do develop breast tissue at a younger age or have issues with nipples being visible and a bralet like this would solve the problem.

  • young girl’s first bras have had padding in them for a while, years. Just take the padding out if you don’t like it or better still don’t buy your 6 year old a bra

  • Wow! And I wonder how expensive they are! Girls and kids in general are maturing earlier, so they do need access to the right clothing. I have had conversations with young girls (perhaps not age 6, but 8+) who have shared how sensitive they feel in the chest area and why they want to wear a crop top or something similar. I think it’s up to the individual. It’s not sexual or trying to objectify girls, but catering to a need.

  • this is disgusting! We have problems with paedophiles so let’s sexualize our young girls – great thinking!

  • I think a thin layer of padding is ok if your nipple is going to be showing and it’s cold. Nipples showing when you are a young girl isn’t good either.

  • Money talks… just don’t buy clothes that “sexualise” young children and the designers will hopefully get the message.

  • I’m not sure who would actually but these for their little girl? I don’t agree with them, let kids be kids they shouldn’t be worrying about breast size or shape at that age.

  • Kids should be allowed to be kids. They grow up so fast as it is. Any sort of bra at this age makes them body conscious. 6 is way too young!
