Mum turns to Facebook to share her anger after her home-cooked lunch was sent home from preschool with a note saying it was unhealthy.

Sharing a photo of the note in a Facebook group, the mum explained she had cooked the sausage rolls herself and they were “loaded with veg”.

“So I cooked my butt off… included in the cook were sausage rolls loaded with veg I sent them off to preschool with them to return along with this note,” she wrote, sharing an image of the note she received back in August.

“Let’s work together to make it easier for children to make healthy choices! There were lots of great choices in this lunchbox however…,” the note read.

“Sausage rolls [are] too high in fat… (Please provide nutrient value if they are homemade) – insert smiley face.”

“The food did not ‘fit with our service’s nutrition guidelines. For some healthier lunchbox ideas, ask an educator, or go to the Good for Kids website,” it concluded.

The mum explained she had packed extra for her son to eat just in case of this exact scenario, although she had also thought two Milo balls included in the lunch box would also be sent home.

“They will still get eaten it’s just so frustrating,” she wrote.

“They do not allow the food item to be eaten once they attach the note I had a feeling this would happen so I packed extra for him. I also packed two Milo balls just to see if they also said no to them, guess what, they were allowed.”

This is getting so frustrating!

Check out all the other parents that have faced similar reprimand. It’s just not on!

  • What i find ridiculous is that they would rather the child not eat anything versus having something that they consider unhealthy.

  • I am gob smacked! I seriously have no words! I get the whole looking after kids health and weight etc but really?!?!

  • Provide guide and have safety rules re: allergies but parents ultimately decide what their children eat. Ridiculous they would rather let the child go hungry than eat homemade food.

  • It is so hard to pack lunches now, food allergies and healthy food restrictions will find a lot of kids are just snacking when at home. my son wont eat lunch as he only has peanut butter sandwiches or PB&J (have tried other things, they just come home).

  • Ridiculous. What if he had no other options, was he to starve? If they had a problem, send the note home but don’t punish him for their opinion.

  • That seems really unfair in allowing milo balls but not home baked sausage rolls. Also I don’t think it’s the preschool’s place to dictate what children should eat as long as they fit the allergy free/ nut free categories.

  • Teachers should not be commenting on kids lunches. It lowers the child’s self esteem.Parents have different styles of lunch making and budgets. And it’s personal to the individual family.

  • This is crazy, they have no right !! And not logical that the Milo balls were allowed.

  • Please provide nutrient value are they serious please. My note back might make for interesting reading

  • Oh I would be SO angry! Teachers have absolutely NO right to critique a lunch box. Come back and talk to me when you are a dietitian would be my response.

  • A Mum can control the ingredients she puts in home made food. Not many sausage rolls have vegetables in them. Normally it is finely grated and very hard to distinguish.
I know for a fact that Mums make food for their special needs children that look like ordinary muffins. In actual fact they use special flour in them and vegetables – not sugar.

  • In my idea there should be a clear difference between home-made meals and packed ones. Unbelievable that the school sent the home-made sausage rolls back!!

    • It is unbelievable and the focus being on lunch boxes is always surprising.
Focus needs to be on activities and exercise which burns up fuel (food).

  • This is crazy, the parents choose what their kids eat. I’d be furious. Fair enough if your kids are only wating processed junk food EVERY day. But this is getting crazy

  • I am actually intrigued about the rule on removing food and what happens to the food? Is the food wasted?
Do their guidelines cover the removal of food which is a child’s source of fuel and energy for the day?
Surely there is an overarching rule/right that is being taken away?

  • Really? They have the right to send the food back home uneaten? Lucky she packed extra!
