A mum has revealed the heartbreaking decision she made to hand back her adopted babies after falling pregnant naturally.

UK mother-of-one Ali Sanders went through the gruelling process of adopting twin boys with her husband Michael after finding out she was infertile.

Speaking to MailOnline, Ali said her maternal instincts failed to kick in and was unable to bond with her new eight-month-old sons.

‘It felt like I was playing — that it wasn’t real,’ she admitted. ‘What made it worse was that Michael bonded with the babies immediately. He already felt like Daddy.’

‘My overriding memory is of sitting there praying that the twins wouldn’t wake up, because when they did, I’d have to go back to pretending to be a mother again.’

Ali’s husband convinced her to visit a GP the day after they brought the twins home as she felt ‘out of sorts’.

Incredibly, a urine sample revealed Ali was pregnant.

Ali and Michael called their social workers. Legally, the boys weren’t fully adopted into their care yet as the paperwork could take months.

By the end of the day, they had sent the twins home back to their foster carers.

‘I don’t think the guilt will ever go. I let down these babies who had already been let down,’ Ali said.

Ali gave birth to a little boy named Jacob and is now expecting a baby girl.

What a horrible situation to be in. Our hearts break for them all.

  • I know for a fact that the adoption process through court is not a quick process. In Aust. the Mother has a certain length of time during which she can change her decision and take her baby/babies home with her. I wonder how old the twins were when they went to live with Ali and Michael.

  • I hope the twins ended up in a happy loving family.

  • so sad all round , but Adopting is a huge step and those 2 boys are now parentless yet again. I hope they get adopted out again really soon and live a full and loving life!

  • Not a choice I could make families are what you create not what DNA they are made up of, Sounds like these poor boys would be better off in the long run with a Mum who could love them freely

  • Very sad and hard decision. I know of a foster parent who were infertile and had 2 girls under a guardianship order and gave up o them when they got pregnant and their own son was born. Adopting/fostering because of infertility and filling your own personally hole/gap is just a doubtful motive and should always be thoroughly investigated.

  • I could not have given them back but I love kids and treat all kids as they are my own. It actually sounded like post natal depression

  • I would hate to be in that situation, hopefully those beautiful boys (I know not the ones pictured) found a loving family. I do feel for the dad who loved and bonded with the babes, but it’s probabbly better this way for everybody.

  • That’s tough to do

  • Maybe for the better if the mother could not bond, could had been her hormones too. Doctors are wrong sometimes as I was told I would be unable to have children. I have 6 living children that says wrong plus some angel babies too.

  • Better for them to be with someone who loves and wants them.

  • They did right by sending them back because she wont be able to give them that love and care which they deserve.

  • I feel sorry for the father who’d bonded with the babies.

    • Me too! How heart breaking for him. Also sad for his wife too that she couldn’t bond like him

  • As sad as it is, it’s better they were given the chance to be adopted by someone who will love them like their own rather than someone who couldn’t bond with them. Incredible that she is pregnant with her second after being told she’s infertile. It sure shows that not every diagnosis is correct.

  • Poor woman. But if she didn’t feel a bond with them and she was actually having bad thoughts, probably it was the best solution. Very hard but maybe the best for everyone. :-(

  • Oh no that’s terrible I hope that these baby twins will be adopted and loved because that’s what they deserve.
