A heartbreaking photo has touched the hearts of thousands after mum shared an image of her sons daily battle “Life isn’t pretty, and cancer destroys a person.”

Love What Matters shared the below image that has since received an outpouring of support and admiration.

Mum, Jessica, shared their ongoing battle to help raise awareness for childhood cancer.

“For anyone battling cancer or enduring chemotherapy. For anyone going through this horrible disease. It is about to get real, real hard and real quick. The picture I’m posting is from this morning, and before you scream and cry ‘why would she post a picture of him in a pull up, the indecency’, well….

1. It doesn’t show more than swimming jammers would and

2. Because life is not always politically correct and pretty, it is real. Life isn’t pretty, and cancer destroys a person.

This was this morning after carrying Drake to the bathroom. Yes, he is in a pull up because 75% of the time he can’t control his bathroom habits.

This is skin and bones, because I have to beg him to eat ONE green bean for supper, or drink a cup of water throughout the day.

This is having your son sleep with you at night because he is afraid of something happening and being alone, and by something I mean dying.

This is having middle of the night conversations with a ten year old, asking if he dies will he go to heaven and will he see his dad there and be able to talk and play with him.

This is him being too weak to get out of bed or walk and needing to be carried or in a wheelchair.

This is him falling asleep as someone is talking to him, because he is too exhausted.

This is him, throwing up every medication I give him and him dry heaving because his stomach is empty except for the spoonful of yogurt I just gave him with his pills.

This is having to take 44 chemo pills last week in a matter of 24 hours.

This is him telling me, ‘mommy, I’m not going to make it.’

This is him not wanting to be touched, because it hurts too much, and using morphine to get through his day.

This is him telling me he is scared and thinks he won’t see his 11th birthday.

This is him and me, telling him that I will continue to fight for him when he can’t. This is him and me, and our world.

This is him, Drake, Stinky Joe, my whole world. From the moment I found out I was pregnant till future forever, he has been my reason for life. He is my smile, my love, my heartbeat. He is also my tears, my heart ache, my frowns. He is my life.”

Thinking of you little man. Keep fighting.

Last year we shared a heartbreaking story of dad who posted a photo of his daughter to make people aware of the darkness that is childhood cancer. Read that article here.

In 2016, it is estimated that 650 children aged 0-14 years will be newly diagnosed with cancer in Australia (365 boys and 285 girls).

The number of new diagnoses is estimated to be higher in the 0–4 year age group (315 children) than in 5–9 year olds (160 children) and 10–14 year olds (175 children).

  • Feel so sorry for you and your son. Cancer is a horrible disease to have at any age.

  • I hope his health improves and doesn’t have as much chemo as was predicted. Maybe the anti-nausea drugs he is being given aren’t working or he could be allergic to morphine and it be part of the problem. An Auntie of mine was allergic to morphine – it made her violently sick. Chemo kills your immune system. If you touch anything out ifn public you have yo immediately use hand sanitizer, stay away from anybody who is not well. Keep your home – the things you come into contact with as sterile as possible. Anything you catch damages your immune system even more and you will struggle to recover from it. It effects the various levels in your blood. Sometimes stronger than normal antibiotics or longer does are needed. Chemo has to be delayed. I have been told by a cancer sufferer that he can’t eat some foods that he really loves – one of them being tomato. He has eaten things he didn’t know it was in and projectile vomitted afterwards. His wife is preparing his food separately because of other very sensitive intolerances. He has just finished his chemo and now has to undergo a myriad of tests in a few weeks, partly to check that his blood is back to normal. I have a cousin who had a rare form of Leukemia discovered when she had started walking confidently, suddenly started falling over, getting large bruises which were just not disappearing for much longer than they should have. Extra tests than normal were needed to diagnose her problem. She was literally bedridden for a few weeks during chemo and had to learn to walk again as she had absolutely no idea. Now in her late 30s she still regularly has to have extensive blood tests to ensure it hasn’t re-appeared. She is a school teacher. lets hope Drake makes a full recovery and has a great future ahead of him.
