Jodie Shaw challenges the idea that a caesarean birth isn’t a real birth by posting an incredibly raw and fresh image of her c-section scar.

Birth Without Fear Facebook page shared Jodie’s photo with the caption, “A new day and a what seems to be another new post from someone insinuating that giving birth by caesarean means that you didn’t give birth.

Can we please just stop!

I obviously can’t change people’s views but I’ve decided to post this picture to see if it may make people understand that despite what our birth plans might say. Sometimes we don’t get a choice. I didn’t get a choice.

I had a fibroid the size of a melon sat on my cervix and a low lying placenta which meant that I’ve been left with no ordinary csection scar. But whether you believe this or not. I gave birth to my baby.

So next time you judge someone for not doing what you consider to be “giving birth” please take a minute to think about why they may have had to deliver that way. Think about the fact that given the choice they probably wouldn’t of chosen this but had no choice. Why would you choose a major operation and 6 weeks of recovery?

This scar saved me from losing a life threatening amount of blood and meant my baby was brought into this world as she should be. Healthy and unharmed, as was I.” -Jodie Shaw”

Congratulations Jodie! We totally agree with you.

New mum, Raye Lee, also recently discovered for herself the brutal truth of a C-section when she gave birth to her first child. After experiencing 38 hours of labour she had an emergency C-section when her baby’s heart stopped with every contraction. Read her story here.

  • I just don’t get what people get out of judging the way in which another mum brings her child into the world. Unfortunately it still happens and can be prevalent among mother’s groups, where new mums should feel the least judged.

  • There is no need for any mum to feel they have to justify the birth of their child. Why would anyone judge? It is no one’s business. Ignore anyone that comments, just not worth the headspace.

  • 12 hours labour is a lot to endure and then have to have a c-section.
Professionals are hesitant to give too much pain relief after a c-section too.

  • I have no idea how a caesarean birth is any different to a natural birth in regards to being a mum. You still walk away with a baby

  • i had an elective c section with my second child and i think the pain afterwards is just as bad as a vaginal delivery, yet it lasts over 6 weeks!

  • I still have a scar similar to this after having an emergency C-section with my third child. Of course it’s real – especially if you have had 12 hours labour prior to the C-section.
