A mum who refused to abort her daughter, despite the advice of doctors, says her baby girl has proved the experts wrong.

A mum who was told to ‘abort and start again’ after her unborn daughter was diagnosed with a rare tumour says her little girl has defied the odds.

Wendy Wong says that her now 5-year-old daughter Savannah is thriving, despite being born with Cystic Hygroma, a potentially life-threatening lymphatic disorder.

A Little Miracle

During her 22-week-scan, Wendy says she was faced with the unexpected and devastating news that they had found complications with the baby.

“When I was 22 weeks pregnant I saw a doctor who told me there was a lump on my baby’s neck and he would need a couple of weeks to do some research on what it could be,” she told YahooNews.

“He made us sit for two weeks, and when we went back to the doctor, he told me to abort our baby at 24 weeks and that we could ‘start again’.”

It was what the doctor said next that Wendy says made her determined to prove him wrong and continue with the pregnancy.

“He said there are two options. I could class the baby as a bad egg, or go through with it and she’ll either die inside me, after birth or on the operating table.”

There Is Hope

A Cystic Hygroma is a fluid-filled sac that is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system that, in an unborn baby, can be an isolated condition or an indication of other genetic disorders.

The risk with a Cystic Hygroma is that it can result in an excess of fluid in the body, increasing the likelihood of fetal demise or neonatal death.

After seeking a second opinion, however, Wendy felt reassured in her decision to carry Savannah to term. Once the little girl was born, she spent two months in hospital having treatment, including an experimental drug that enabled her to go home.

Savannah continues to take a liquid form of medication to keep the condition under control and drain the cysts throughout her body. Wendy is just thankful that the condition was detected early.

“There are a lot of single mums and families who think that they can’t have a baby with this condition and I want to tell them that this condition is manageable and to look at my daughter for proof,” she said.

It is so wonderful to see that Savannah has defied all the odds and is a healthy and happy child – she really is proof that a diagnosis doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

  • I had a mild drama compared to this. I was told when I had my scan that they couldnt find any kidneys with my third child. I had to go 2 long weeks before they would rescan. I was told that if no kidneys were found the baby would die and I would either abort naturally or they would induce me. The horrible thing is that in this situation you have to go through the labour knowing that your baby will not survive. I was so very lucky when they found my baby did have kidneys. As time passed I knew of two other ladies that were told the same thing but sadly both their babies passed away.

  • News like this can be devastating – the doctor should have been fully open with what can and cannot be done – this poor mum having to go to another doctor for a 2nd opinion to make her decision – it’s just not right.

  • It really worries me the throw it away attitude that society in general is getting now. Everything is so disposable. Is human life worth so little that we just throw it away and start again? A sad state of affairs my friends.

  • Luckily I didn’t have any complications with the baby I can’t imagine the extra stress worrying about your baby surviving would cause.

  • Such an awful thing to be faced with. Many families couldn’t cope with this.

  • I hate it when the doctors tell you that you need to abort your child. They should only tell you that it is an option if you want to go that way. Just to nurse your child for a couple of hours is better than never having that option at all.

  • In my opinion a doctor should never give the advice to abort. I’m glad this mum choose life for her girl. And yes, I’ve have a miracle child too !
