Mum and registered nurse, Camille Echols, shared a recent experience with her daughter to warn other parents about the danger of not choosing immunisations.

Camille is speaking out after her immunosuppressed daughter recently contracted chicken pox.

She wrote on Facebook, “I’ve been relatively quiet on social media about the “Anti-vax” movement. I’ve seen smart-ass memes saying “why would my unvaccinated kids be a threat to your vaccinated kids if you’re so sure they work?”

THIS is why. There are people who cannot have live vaccines, like my daughter, who had a kidney transplant when she was 2 years old. She got one varicella vaccine but couldn’t get the second because she was immunosuppressed and instead of developing immunity, she would have contracted the virus.

She was exposed to a child with chickenpox this weekend and now we are in the ER. She’s getting labwork, injections of immunoglobulin and then we have to wait to see what the infectious disease doctor says. The incubation period of chicken pox is 7-21 days. So even with all we are doing, she could still become sick in the next 3 weeks. And that would mean an automatic admission to the hospital for IV antiviral meds. She could become very, very sick from this.

Please, if you are someone who believes your child will get autism from vaccines, PLEASE educate yourself. There isn’t a single peer reviewed study that came to that conclusion. And the people choosing to skip vaccinations put children like my daughter at risk. She has been through SO much already. And this was avoidable.”

Camille has since updated her post to add,

“• I never claimed that the child with chicken pox was not vaccinated. That is irrelevant. The resurgence of chicken pox, whooping cough, measles and other diseases that were nearly eradicated years ago is a direct result of a large percentage of the population deciding not to vaccinate their children without sound research the support that decision.

• As for those telling me to “educate myself,” I am a pediatric RN with over 10 years’ experience in transplant and chronic illness populations. I have had extensive education regarding vaccinations. I would not post about something I was ignorant about.

• Those saying “it’s just chicken pox, she won’t die,” please educate yourselves on transplant recipients. There are millions of people waiting for life saving organs. With those numbers, the odds are good that someone in your life has been affected by organ failure.

Her post has gone viral with over 113,000 shares and 86,000 reactions.  please be aware of the risks to other people in the community.

This week Kyly Clarke has hit out at parents who don’t vaccinate – read that story here.

  • yep getting vaccinated is great for general herd immunity to help protect the little ones like this

  • Yup, this just highlights the selfishness of those who don’t immunise.

  • I am glad they are taking precautions in trying to boost her immune system and lessen the risk of a case of chicken pox. Putting the girl in isolation will also prevent her spreading it to others. You can be a “carrier” without suffering yourself too. I hope she makes a quick recovery from the treatment she has to receive

  • I hope she will be ok, thank you for sharing.

  • Those who don’t immunise their child/ren are very selfish for this very reason, not caring about others that may be very susceptible to illness & become very sick.

  • I hope Ashley gets better very soon. Thank you Kyly for sharing. I hope people take a step back and think seriously about getting their children immunised. I know it’s their right to decide either way but if they don’t immunise their children, keep them away from others until they no longer have that illness.

  • My twins are immunocompromised – have had some vaccines but not able to have all – this happening is my nightmare. Please vaccinate your kids. My kids can’t be protected – why not do something to prevent a disease that could kill or make my kids seriously ill? We already spend months in hospital each year. I worry so much about my kids catching a preventable disease – and I can’t do anything about it.
Hoping this little girl recovers soon.

  • I have been her boat my 3rd child could not have the vaccine for whooping cough due to his reaction from the first. He later contracted whooping cough in his teens, a modify version but still bad. My cousin lost his daughter to the after effects of chicken poxs, some get mild cases others do die.

  • well said – I am so glad that she got back on the post and defended herself to the smart people that told her otherwise – good to put them back in their place.

I do hope that her daughter is ok and doesn’t get too sick

  • I can understand saying that big pharma are lying about vaccines. They have something to gain. But almost ALL medical professionals are adamant that vaccines are safe and vaccines work. Why would nurses lie? Its not like they want to be busier at work. They have enough to do already. Vaccinate your kid so you don’t kill someone else’s kid!

    • You are right about them lying about vaccines, the dangerous ingredients used that are cheaper versions of what they are supposed to be using. The problems are not whether you vaccinate or not it is what is in the vaccinations and how they are made.

  • People who don’t vaccinate should face charges when something like this happens.

  • Poor little girl. What a scare! Her mother has all the rights to say what she said. People that don’t vaccinate, are putting other people at risk. Not fair at all! I hope the girl will be all right!!

  • It would be heartbreaking to watch your child suffer from a preventable disease.
