One clever Aussie mum has come up with a genius idea to encourage her children to help keep the house tidy.

The mum shared her simple trick on Facebook.

chuck it bucket

A simple bucket, helps her keep the house tidy and the kids more aware of what they leave laying around.

Sharing a picture of the ‘chuck it bucket’, the mum wrote on a label that if she finds things laying around she will “chuck them in the bucket”.

She explained: “[Then], if it remains in the bucket for more than two days I will chuck it in the bin.

“If you have a problem with this, I will chuck you in the bin. Love Mum.”

Her post has proved popular with other mums and attracted more than 2,000 likes.

sunday box

We have shared the Sunday box in the past, where you pick up the toys and toss them in the box and the kids can’t reclaim them until Sunday.  Read more on that here.

I think my favourite system is still the “f#ck it bucket” Read all about that technique HERE.

What system do you use to get the kids to pick up their toys without fuss?

  • Not sure this will work, but feel her pain.

  • Ha! A good strategy wonder if it works

  • I love this idea. My sons used to leave their things laying around but I’d just sweep them into a corner and put a blanket over them. They soon learnt if they wanted something it was better to put them away to use another day.

  • I love this. My son is 18 and still untidy to a point. It’s a constant battle. And I am told by everyone that it’s normal. I’m fighting it… really hard. But then also having to pick my battles. A conundrum. But I really really love this idea.

  • You gotta do what you gotta do! If this works for you then great! I dont think throwing the items away is the best idea…maybe donating them would be a better option

  • How old is your youngest child? Sometimes you need to help a little bit to remember where they go if some have different spots to the others. Those that are destined for the bin put them in a garbage bag and hide them in your shed or somewhere. See how long it takes for the kids to miss them. Maybe rotate their toys and only let them have some of them for awhile then swap some over. You can always let the kids think you have left them in the bin. There is always charities looking for toys. Those that are washable places like Ronald McDonald House or a Childrens Hospital will use them for their play rooms. Some have classrooms where some kids like to do schoolwork but can’t go home or to school while they are having special treatment. They have nurses in the classroom with them in cases a child needs assistance healthwise. In some states there is community housing (could be one large building) where people stay with their other children while the patient is in the hospital and they live too far away to go home and be back in the morning. Sometimes if some of the country patients are well enough to go home overnight they can go there with the parents and be taken back to the hospital the next morning. It depends what treatment they are having and whether their immune system is compromised.

  • Interesting. Not sure it would work for me though. I’d change the chuck it in the bin to donate to charity so another child can have it.

  • We haven’t done anything yet but I like the idea of consequences but with a second chance but no third.
