I started writing this article and words just seemed to flow. This topic is of great interest to me as I see many of my clients experience a great fear of returning to the workforce after being away so long.

The reality is that preparing your energy to return to the workforce after being absent can be daunting for some Mum’s, especially if you have spent quite a few years raising little stars and not thinking about investing in your own self development and energetic purpose. Well, forget fear. I am excited to share three highly practical strategies on how to return to work after being away so long and, well…kick butt!

Three Strategies

1. Mindset & Perspective

Let’s get you excited about what you can bring to the table when you start a job. Your mindset must be energetically clear and in working order. The working world often talks about IP (intellectual property) or Skillset (your learning, education and talents). The more IP and Skillsets you have, the more confidence you have in your ability to do a job. Confidence opens up your energy and provides a healthy dose of self- love. If you feel capable – you feel energised. And when you are energised, you can do anything.

So, it make sense then to establish your IP and Talents so you are clear on how great you really are before tackling a job interview or writing a CV.

Apart from your previous working life, let’s review some skills you probably learned from Mother Hood that are highly relevant in the workforce. Here are a few easy ones! Coping under pressure with lack of sleep/tiredness, multitasking, efficiency, pleasing several stakeholders, negotiating, budgeting, proactive tasks, patience, accuracy, consistency, letting go of little things (not so uptight), jack all of trades, life-saving skills, birds eye or expanded vision (you need to keep your eyes open always), and of course perspective (knowing what’s important).

Plus, if you think about it, most people when they start a new job (take for example university  students) don’t know how to use a particular system, the software or the company process. They simply learn on the job. All you need to know is how to apply theoretical information or skills (of which you have many) to a practical situation and you do this all of the time… You did it when you became a Mother at birth and were forced to achieve on the spot with no training to protect your child’s life. Nothing more stressful than that! Your natural energetic skills always kick in. You are more valuable than you realise.

2. Spiritual Compass

Most Mum’s try to return to work for just a money reason. Whilst I am not judging this, at the end of the day it’s really important to value your time and energy and choose what excites you. There are so many ways to make money so why not choose what you are passionate about? You do have choices and you should be clear with yourself what’s important. Good questions to ask are:

Do I want to do the same old thing as before? This might be a yes!
What kind of company do I want to work for? Does their culture fit my values?
Does this place “feel” right to work for. This is an intuitive gut feeling. It’s AHA (yes or) UH (no).

Your Spiritual compass (divine intuition) will guide you if you allow it. Put some intentions out there as to what sort of job you would excel in and remember that you ultimately get to choose it by manifesting the right thing into your life.

One other really cool thing to think about is this. What new Identity do I wish to undertake now I am going back to the workforce? How have I changed and what externally reflects the internal person within? Think about clothes, makeup (or lack of), communication style, leadership style, voice and people you wish to mingle with. Again, use your intuition and gut feelings about how you nurture the woman (you) returning to work.

3. Plug in and Fire up

One last thing I would recommend is that if you have not kept up to date with technology, ask a friend or family member to give you some basic lessons and pointers. You don’t need a 50 hour workshop on email, social media, office programs or fancy software. Just get the basics right. It will make you feel that bit more comfortable. If you have been in a high-end, high pressure corporate career and returning, I recommend getting the latest 5 best sellers from amazon and read up on current trends and thought leadership in that industry. Get ahead of the game before you start and bring in fresh insights to your returning role. I think the Dalai Lama said that the trained mind is limited as more knowledge and clutter in your head can actually block fresh thought and new solutions. The innocent mind has many ideas! The trained mind only a few.

Just remember. Your Spirit will lead you and support you along the way. Let your energy flow and know that you already know everything you need to. Your wise innate voice within needs to be switched on and allowed a voice. Need to enhance your intuitive mind and tap into that inner voice? Try a meditation class with us or do it on your own. Learning the art of meditation frees up your inner voice. Alternatively – try a coaching session with us either face to face or phone/skype before you return to work to get your inner fire ready for action.
