Mum shares the scariest day of her life to warn other new parents.

Sharing her story on Breastfeeding Mama Talk the mum wrote,

“Scariest day of my life by far. Did you know that babies could choke on breastmilk? Like seriously can’t catch their breath, call an ambulance trip to the emergency room choke? Well I definitely did not.

“Thankfully he’s okay now, but for a brief while he wasn’t & I’ve never felt more panicked or lost in my entire life. Watching my teeny tiny new baby get hooked up to an oxygen mask with all sorts of tubes & codes being called out is one if the worst things a parent could ever witness.

“They’re just so small & helpless, but most importantly irreplaceable. I’m so thankful to God & wonderful paramedics that he’s okay & home where he belongs.

“Point is, apparently this “freak” accident can actually happen to babies & it’s more common than I thought. Especially when you have an over active let down & produce too much milk (something some people wish for). Sure wish I would have known that & been more prepared for something so insanely scary. He had to get a chest x ray & I’m told to monitor him for aspiration pneumonia. He turned blue & I really thought I was going to lose him. I had no idea this was possible, I mean I understand how, I just can’t believe it.

“I breastfed my daughter for 18 months & nothing like his ever happened to us. I suppose my question is what can I do about this? Any experience? Any other moms had this happen to them. I’m talking like limp, in an ambulance oxygen masks, & sirens type of drama, all from us doing what we’re both supposed to be doing.

“I was told by a lactation consultant that I have a strong let down & maybe an over supply & maybe I should be feeding him laying down or to push down in my breast to stop the flow but I really didn’t understand.

“I would think that pumping a bit off that boob before feeding him may help but she said it’ll just produce more & make the problem worse. I’m just at a loss here. Thank you for taking the time & reading my novel, I could really use some help. I have no one to talk to about breastfeeding or issues that come with it & the advice here has always helped.”

One comment from a specialist suggested the mum see a speech pathologist asap! “I’m an SLP and have worked in the NICU and infant feeding Please, please see a speech pathologist specializing in infant feeding. This is not normal, no matter your flow, and baby needs to be evaluated. A dual appt with an SLP and an LC would be ideal. A little coughing is something you can address with a little pumping or positioning, having to call the EMTs is something else entirely.”

  • I guess babies can choke on anything, just like us, if it goes down the wrong way……you choke. Ending up in emergency at the hospital is extreme. A pat on the back always worked for mine

  • Babies choking is my nightmare! I struggled to find the right formula for my second baby for the first 4months cause he would always choke and throw up after having breast milk

  • That’s why’s we supervise little ones. Then after breastfeeding burp them. Sounds strange to me. Breastfeeding is liquid.
But choking happens and the body response is pretty scary looking.
    Glad she’s ok.

  • Could some of her Milk have been too thick ? I know a baby whose Mum had a let down just before feeding. The baby only drank a little bit then spewed it up and it was very thick like cream you would buy in a bottle at the supermarket.
