She has two beautiful blond boys, but “I should have had more kids, started younger,” says Naomi Watts, who turns 46 this week.

Sasha, 7, and Kai, 5 1/2, keep her on her toes, but she and her partner, actor Liev Schreiber, are blessed with complementary parenting styles.

“Liev has a lot more courage than me,” she says in a new interview in More magazine. “He’s always saying, ‘Let the kids do it. Take the training wheels off!’ My bit of fear balances him, and he balances my fear.”

She’s still a little bit brave, though. “I’ve skydived. I went swimming with sharks that weren’t in cages. I went on safari, where you’re sitting with lions just five feet from you. And I was photographed for King Kong standing on a gargoyle near the top of the Chrysler Building in New York City. I had a harness and a rope, but if you fall, you’re hanging [61 floors up]!” she says.

“But now that I have kids, I don’t want to do so many daredevily things anymore.”

It’s not just Naomi who wishes she’d had more kids.

Her close friend Nicole Kidman told a magazine three years ago, “Have you seen her children? They’re so blonde, so beautiful. I keep saying to them, ‘Make more.’ ”

“I always wanted children,” Naomi once said. “I thought that I would have them young, like my mother. I never thought I would have them as late as I did.”

“You grow up and hopefully become more self-aware. I think I’m a better parent. I had a lot I wanted to do when I was younger, and perhaps I wouldn’t have been as focused; I got a lot out of the way in terms of my own dreams.”

Do you wish you’d started younger, like Naomi does? We’d love to hear.

  • I wish I had started younger, but wouldnt change my life experiences for anything. They helped mould me, then again if I had met my hubby earlier in life who knows? Maybe we would’ve had more children.

  • I wish I had started when I was younger too as I think I will be getting to old when I’m ready for another, which won’t be for a while.

  • Better late than never I say! I am expecting my first at 32 after a long struggle with infertility – if I only get one I will count my blessings

  • I had my two kids when I was 28 and 29. So glad I did. I’m now past all of the sleep issues, nappy troubles and little baby stuff. At 40 I have independent kids! It’s great! I don’t think that I could do the baby thing now.

  • Sometimes these things are beyond our control.

I guess if she really was determined for more she could try naturally or adopt.

  • I always thought I’d have my first child at 30, but by the time I’d finished studying, travelling and got married, I was 32. 34 with my second and my body hasn’t coped with recovery as well second time around. I’m happy with 2 children and with the life stage I’m at. We have life experiences to share and our finances sorted. Even if we’d had our children earlier I still think we’d have stuck with 2.

  • I started trying at 26 and had great difficulty getting pregnant, giving birth to my son when I was 30, nearly 31. I didn’t think to try any earlier, and it was only after my father’s death that I realised what was important to me and my unborn children wouldn’t know their Pa.

  • I don’t wish I was younger as I actually planned when we wanted our kids.
I do wish I was fitter though.

  • We were just so happy to fall pregnant and have two beautiful kids, we are older parents but you can’t plan when you will fall in love with the right person.

  • What a nice story. You cannot always choose when you can get pregnant unfortunately.
