Nappy cakes are an American invention but they’re a popular baby shower gift in Australia too.

Despite having ‘cake’ in the name nappy cakes are completely non-edible and are made from several tiers of rolled up nappies. These are then tied with ribbons and dotted about with practical items for new parents such as toys, booties, bath products, wash cloths etc.

While nappy cakes are all the rage they can be expensive to buy. It’s really not difficult to make your own nappy cake so we’ve included an easy-to-follow tutorial at the end of this article. First let’s get to grips with why you should make one in the first place.

5 reasons a nappy cake is an awesome baby shower gift!

Rather than giving a new mum a boring plastic bag of nappies, a nappy cake a much more personal, thoughtful and creative way to celebrate her impending birth. Nappy cakes:

1. A nappy cake has the wow effect

Nappy cakes look impressive, you’ll certainly get comments and interest when you walk into a room with it.

2. A nappy cake makes a focal point

A nappy cake makes a great centrepiece on the table and announces that this gathering is a baby shower. It also gives guests a focal point for instagram photos.

3. A nappy cake can easily be personalised

A nice touch is to make a simple named rosette to accompany the nappy cake and pin it to the ribbon (e.g Sophie’s Baby Shower) This can be colour coordinated to match the baby shower theme or the nappy cake. The mum-to-be can wear the rosette and save it as a keepsake.

4. A nappy cake won’t break the bank

A nappy cake looks impressive but really is quite inexpensive to make if you use an affordable brand of newborn nappies like Little One’s. You can find practical items to add to the nappy cakes such as baby toys, baby bibs and baby clothes in Woolworth’s Baby Accessories.

5. A nappy cake shows you care

A DIY nappy cake shows that you’ve put thought and effort into your gift. It doesn’t take too much time to make but it will look like you’ve spent ages on it.

How to make a nappy cake in 3 easy steps.

There are many extravagant nappy cake tutorials out there but if it’s your first time it’s best to keep it simple. That’s why we sourced this quick and easy nappy cake tutorial that looks fab and takes less than an hour to make.

  • Large rubber bands – 4 total
  • A tall skinny object – for the centre of your cake such as a bottle of Johnson’s baby wash
  • Ribbon- to tie around the nappy tiers
  • Small baby items – such as baby booties, wash cloths, bath toys, teether etc. to decorate your cake
  • Cake stand or cardboard circle – to build your cake on.
