Despite owning an extremely successful career in acting and singing and her new business Chi Khi, she cites her biggest life achievement as “having children and being married to the most wonderful man”. There’s no denying she has her priorities right.

“When you get married and have children, your whole life changes. They become your focus and what’s important in life,” she says.

Bassingthwaighte and her music producer husband Cameron McGlinchey have two gorgeous children, Harper, 5, and Hendrix, 3, who are admittedly the reason behind her new business Chi Khi (pronounced cheeky), a collection of kids clothes and skincare for children with sensitive skin. She’s also launched a newborn line. “I wanted to create a range, especially for newborns up to Size 2 minis, of items that could go from day to night and sleep to play, essentially be comfy enough to sleep in while cool enough for hitting the streets with Mum.”

“Chi Khi was inspired by my children in every way. My kids have really delicate skin. “Harper hated anything that, as she would say, was too itchy or scratchy.  So comfort was key. And as a mum I wanted things to be super stylish with practical elements.”

Aimed at ‘cool kids’, Bassingthwaighte  discovered a niche in the market for clothes that are ‘edgy’ and ‘urban’, but comfortable at the same time. “I searched high and low to get the right fabric and found this gorgeous bamboo cotton, perfect for sensitive skin.”

The new range features animal prints, black-and-white checks, mesh bomber jackets and mesh sports tanks.  While her skincare range features two products aimed for those suffering with eczema and dermatitis. “I got one mum to trial out the cream on her daughter and after one week the results were amazing!” She enthuses.

Both Bassingthwaighte and her husband work from home so they get to spend as much time as they can with their kids.

Her slick office comes complete with a mini desk and chair set for Harper and Hendrix so they can play close by – she’s a real hands-on mum. So how does she balance her work life with motherhood?

“Anything is possible if you set your mind to it. It helps to have a great support network, but it’s all about balance. I think it’s great for my kids to see us working and that we love what we do, but I also know my kids will grow up so fast, so I spend as much time with them as possible,” she says.

  • It is hard work sourcing 100% cotton fabric – no synthetic fibres which seem to be the main cause of skin irritation. Some synthetic fibres don’t allow air circulation and it makes you considerably more prone to heatrash and other skin problems if you get the slightest bit too warm. Have skin problems in our family and have tried various remedies, visited dermatologists, allergists to trace alllergies. Tried more creams than we care to remember, found out some soaps have caustic in them. We swapped to non-soap cleansers. shampoos, special laundry products. Main problems were synthetic fabric and chemicals in what is supposed to be good soap.
