Drivers caught drunk behind the wheel will lose their licences immediately for at least three months under strict new laws that come into effect this week.

Motorists will also be slapped with an on-the-spot fine of $561, even for low and first time offences under the new reforms introduced in New South Wales on Monday, shares Daily Mail.

Those caught behind the wheel under the influence of illicit drugs will also cop the same punishment.

The tough crackdown was announced by the NSW Government earlier this month as part of its ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to drink and drug-driving and save lives on the state’s roads.

‘This means anyone caught drink-driving in NSW, at any level, including low-range, can now lose their licence immediately,’ roads minister Andrew Constance said.

‘This reform makes it clear if you break the law, you will pay the price. Drivers who have an illegal level of alcohol in their blood or have used illegal drugs have no place on the road.’

I think all states need to enforce this new policy. Do you agree?

  • Tougher laws is probably a good thing but I don’t agree with someone loosing their license if they are only just over the legal limit.

  • This should be for all states but I think they should also have their vehicle impounded.

  • Yes we need dangerous drivers off the road, it has been proven time and time again that many innocent people are killed by drunk or drugged drivers.

  • I think it should be across the whole country!

  • Agree wholeheartedly. If you have had a drink or two, don’t drive. And never drive with drugs in your system. If you are caught with either your licence should be suspended and your vehicle taken from you so you cannot drive.

  • So glad I no longer drink; never have to worry, and I think it should be a Nation wide law.

  • I think it’s great. May make people think twice about taking the risk of drinking that extra one that could put them over the edge. It’ll keep our streets safer.

  • This is a great move – it’s harsh, but drunk drivers are dangerous.

  • Good to crack down on this. There also has to be more education in the community too!

  • Yes, definitely all state should get on board. It’s a serious danger.

  • I must admit, I’ve been driving for over 30 years and rarely do I drive even after having had one drink hours earlier. It’s not worth risking it. And with the Victorian road toll so high, we obviously need to work harder on this.

  • I agree with the new law. The problem is how to stop those who are unlicenced from driving? you see so many on tv that continue to drive even after loss of licence.

  • Good!! Same with mobile phone use, also think they should be charged with attempted murder!

  • Whilst I agree with tougher penalties, It doesn’t solve the education piece. Coming down harder without a proper campaign doesn’t help anyone.
