A Newborn Baby Essentials Checklist is definitely going to help if you’re feeling daunted and overwhelmed by the prospect of your new baby!

You don’t need to buy everything on that very long list of ‘baby essentials’ you’ve been given by your well meaning friends.

In fact, buying most of it will be a huge waste of money. They may swear by a white noise toy but your baby might hate it.

It’s much wiser (and cheaper!) to just buy the baby essentials. You can always get nice-to-have products to make your life easier later..

Here are 6 baby essentials we believe you’ll need, so just focus on these ones for now.

1. Clothes

Newborns can get by just fine with six onesies, six sleepers, a few singlets, pairs of socks and a couple of beanies. Instead of blankets, you may like to use baby sleeping bags so they keep warm all night.

Depending on the time of year, you’ll need a couple of cardigans or jumpers for daywear in winter and a muslin wrap for swaddling in summer.

2. Bed and Bedding

Your newborn will happily sleep in a bassinet or crib in the corner of your room for the first few months. Though many parents will have a separate nursery and go straight to using a full size baby cot, which is a safe and cost-effective option as baby grows.

If you buy a second hand baby cot, then check it is Australian Standard approved and fit with a new mattress and sheets. Second hand mattresses can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

3. Baby Car Seat

Which baby car seat you choose depends on your budget and your preference. You might prefer to buy a convertible car seat that lasts until your child is four years old, or to buy a removable baby carrier that can be taken in and out of the car.

Many parents opt for a baby carrier as you can move your child from the car without disrupting their sleep. Whichever option you choose, always ensure the product you buy meets Australian safety standards for child restraints.

4. Pram

Newborns can’t sit up or use their heads so you’ll need a pram or a stroller that fully reclines. Understandably it’s expensive to buy a separate pram and stroller, so you might want to buy a capsule that converts to stroller. Of all the essentials you buy this will be the biggest expense but is necessary if you want to travel safely with your baby.

5. Nappies and Wipes

You’ll need a stock of newborn disposable nappies and wipes for multiple changes throughout the day (and night!). Plus a nappy bag so you can carry nappies, a change mat and wipes when out visiting. Be sure to look for a brand that offers not only excellent quality, comfort and dryness but a brand that is great value for money like Little One’s Nappies.

6. Muslin Cloths and Towels

Muslin cloths are by far the handiest items when you’re a new mum. A pack of 4-6 can see you through wiping up sick spills, swaddling baby for sleeping, burping and as a breastfeeding cover. Just chuck them in the wash when dirty. A couple of soft baby towels (the ones with hoods are cute) are also useful to dry off bub after their bath.

  • For me it was the change table. I so badly wanted one and my friends got me a 2nd hand one which was awesome. Sure saved my back.

  • I would say a baby harness or sling as well if your Bub is a bad sleeper and just wants cuddles so you can still get things done. Also a good quality waterproof mat for them to lie on the floor to play.

  • a very good idea to share

  • I would say swaddles, especially zip up ones if your babies are anything like mine and could get out of anything else. Bottles should probably be on the list also, as they are handy, even if breastfeeding. And a baby harness can be very useful also.

  • And that’s just the beginning!

  • Well I always have taken it to a whole new level cause I love to be prepared I would add to this simple list and take it to the next level with:

Car essentials: Scissors (to open packets of those emergency dummies when you lose yours)
    Dummies
    Pain relief with a syringe
    Teething gel
    Change of clothes for mum
Nappy bags for those stinky nappies you need to change in the car boot
    Bottle of sanitizer
Baby carrier for those times a pram is just too much effort
    Breast pads

I know this is an essentials list but I always found having the car prepared of the emergencies had helped this mumma with her 4 boys

  • An excellent list of the essentials. Good things to get for baby shower presents too

  • I agree. I didn’t even leave the house with anything other than clean nappies, wipes, a bottle (when bottle feeding), and change mat. Never saw the need for hundreds of items! I never purchased muslin wraps either. Didn’t see the need for them. Still not sure what they are for and I’ve got 2 kids.

  • I think also bottles and formula. When I came home with my newborn I had no idea what brand to get. I never thought I would have to formula feed – but did.

  • Haha, was just about to say add frozen meals in there too as well!

  • I’d add frozen meals in there too

  • Baby bag & manicare nail scissors/clippers set! I always suggest that comes in very handy to trim babies’ long soft nails and prevent them scratching/

  • A practical baby bag is pretty essential if you ever plan on leaving the house!
